So DS is obsessed with our cups and drinking. He reaches for our coffee mugs, water bottles, and any other drink we have and gets really excited when we let him touch them. He tries to mimick us drinking so when is a normal time to introduce a cup? I know straws are better than sippies for speech development, but do you start with a straw? Any recommendations for specific cups? How is everyone else planning to approach cups/drinking?
I don't remember when we started giving DS a cup, but I think he was around 6-7 months. And even then, it was mostly just for fun because he didn't really seem to get it until he was a little older. But that's how they learn I mostly gave it to him when DH and I were eating and he'd chew/suck on it. The first cup we used was similar to these:
IMO, cups are similar to bottles. They'll have some they prefer, so its kind of just trial and error. DS never really took to the spout type cups for some reason. He learned how to drink from a straw really early on and has preferred them ever since.
My LO is really into drinks too. Already reaching for my alcoholic beverages! I have put it up to his mouth so starts to understand. I also plan on sitting him down with us as we eat meals so he understands we sit at the table for meals. still need to get a high chair! And at that time let him explore spoons, cups and some foods when the time comes. usually around 5-6 months is a good time to introduce cups.

We have the FP Space Saver chair too. We've been putting DD2 in it when we eat so she can be part of family dinner. For now, she has toys on the tray.
With DD1, we put water in the cup but we didn't offer until after she started solids. I only pumped enough BM for her bottles so giving her extra BM wasn't an option. With DD2, I might do BM since I am pumping more. I haven't really thought about it yet.
I just ordered these from the D14 store yesterday.
I was at Target today and they ha an orange one which is the color DS is most attracted to so I got it. He may be too young for it still but I figured he would like having a cup like Mom and dad.
DS loves his cup! I don't think he has figured out how that it has water or how to drink from it, but he seems to enjoy mimicking mom and dad. Plus orange is is favorite.
I think she likes it! She was loving her cup all through dinner. Only issue I have is that she dropped it on the floor a few times and each time it hit the floor it sprayed some water.

graybaby only with a lot of assistance. On her own she puts the handle in her mouth or tries to put the bottom in her mouth. Only occasionally she will get it right. It's so cute to watch her try to figure it out.
Do you all give LO's water in the cups? And do they actually drink it?
Trigger warning--I read a local news story of parents who were charged with murder because they couldn't afford formula, so they diluted the milk with water and the baby got water poisoning from drinking too much. Everything I've read said that babies don't need beverages besides formula or BM before age 1...is this a UO? I'm all for LO drinking water at the right time.
Don't flame me! Genuine, FTM question.
I give him water in his cup. At this age they don't drink a lot. And I think they can have up to 2oz at a time. He usually has like 3 sips. It's more of a learning experience for him. Teaching him how to drink out of something else. I don't think you should put water in a bottle though.
