So I spent 3 hours in the ER tonight getting an IV and blood work done because of gastroenteritis (most likely) and I couldn't keep anything down. They gave me a prescription for zofran if the nausea continues. It makes me nervous because the Dr said it's a category C drug and it's so early in my pregnancy (online it says Cat B- maybe Dr said B but I misheard him). I know a lot of women take it. What are your thoughts about it? Benefits outweigh the risk if I'm miserable?
Zofran is typically considered safe during pregnancy. My sister had a zofran pump with her first pregnancy due to hyperemesis and she had no problems. Warning it can make you constipated though. Staying hydrated is important so if you need it to help keep fluids down, I would take it. Hope you feel better soon.
Category C means not researched, right? I think if you're unable to eat or drink that LO is going to be in more danger from lack of resources than s/he may be from the drug. Benefits outweigh the risks.
I also know a woman with hyperemesis. I can't imagine what she'd do without Zofran.
My ob has me on zofran for nausea/vomiting. I try to take it only when really needed but I still end up taking about two a day. That is still less then what the directions say to take.
I never thought there would be an issue with it since my ob prescribed it.
And I also took it my last pregnancy and had no complications.
I was on zofran due to hyperemesis my entire pregnancy with DD and she's fine. I had one nurse (out of several dozen) try to talk me off of it. The research is spotty, but from what several doctors told me was dehydration / weight loss was much worse for the baby.
I think Zofran is pretty safe. It has been approved for a long time, so if there were bad effects they would be well publicized. Dehydration is way worse. I hope you feel better!!
I'm pretty sure Zofran is category B. My OB's office told me it was fine to take it, and I definitely will if I have morning sickness, because I can't handle nausea/vomiting. As PP's have said, the benefit outweighs the risk here. Gastroenteritis can seriously dehydrate you. I hope you feel better soon!

I had H.G. the whole pregnancy with my youngest and took Zofran in the beginning and Phenergan in the end and he had no health issues. I still lost alot of weight but he was healthy. I am taking Zofran again with this pregnancy and the pros outweigh the con IMO
