I use think baby sunscreen. It is recommended as a safe sunscreen. I haven't used big spray on Ds yet but I use a spray from Burt's bees that uses lemongrass and other herbs. I haven't been able to find it in stores any more but BBB ad some simar products. I think the natural kind works better than OFF.
Our pediatrician recommended Neutrogena Pure and Free baby. Our nanny brings the babies to the park everyday and puts sunscreen on them. I'd prefer she didn't since the dr said you're supposed to wait until 6 months but I'd rather her put on something I picked out instead of a random sunscreen she has. The pediatrician just said to make sure to wipe it off her before bed each night and not to put any on her hands.
I second the Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby. DD is only 5 months, but I'm not taking the chance of her getting burned if we are going to be outside in the sun. I needed something I could pick up from Walmart, so I did some research and it was recommended on a few internet sites. I really liked it and used it on myself too!
I haven't used any bug spray yet. I do have a mosquito net that goes over her carseat/stroller that our pedi gave us. If we are outside in the evening, I just try to keep her covered with either clothing or a muslin blanket. I may try Burt's Bees or something similar since the mosquitoes are freaking vicious where we live.
I need to research mosquito spray. Or just read the recs here. Last year we got swarmed so bad with Mosquitos that they were showing up on our weather radars. It was so awful.

What?! That sounds awful.
We have bats that show up on the radar. Maybe we should get them together and solve some problems
Bats are so cool ! I wish I could find a picture of that weather radar to show you it was crazy ! Eta: found a picture, what looks like rain is actually a mosquito swarm

I got a chance to go to see the bats come out last year. It was so amazing! Here are some of my pictures
It amazes me that we still have mosquitoes in the area with all of these bats!
That is awesome ! We watch the bat flight at Carlsbad caverns atleast once a year ! They are just too cool !

We use Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby too. Works great, DD1 has never had a sun burn. I've been keeping DD2 out of the sun so far but would use sun screen prior to 6mo old before risking sun burn.
No recs on bug spray. Bedtime is before the mosquitoes come out.

Check out the Consumer Reports test of natural sunscreens. I watched the video clip last week, and some brands don't hold up to their advertised SPF. If I can find it again I will post it, it had good information.
