Pumping and excess lipase

Hi all! I am due in September with DS #2 and am hoping for some input.

With DS1 I was able to stay home for a year. I pumped a few times but quickly realized I had what I assume to be excess lipase (milk smelled/tasted terrible after just a few hours at room temp or a few days in the freezer). I just kept BFing for that first year and didn't worry about it too much.

This time around, I'll be going back to work much sooner. I'm hoping to be able to work out a system to pump and scald right away and was wondering if anyone here has had to manage that. Any tips?

I don't have any experience with scalding etc. but it is my understanding that they may just drink the milk with the high lipase. If they do, you don't have to worry about it. It is not something that will hurt them

I hope so. DS screamed whenever we tried to give him pumped milk, and after tasting it I don't blame him. I'm sure we'll check this time around, just want to be prepared for the worst!

Bumping this as I've recently found myself having an issue with sour milk. Been pumping 8 months and now need to figure out a solution at work to manage or prevent sour milk.

From what I understand lipase is not sour milk. It's milk that smells like soap, right? Sour might be milk gone bad.

I get that occassionally, no rhyme or reason why. My DD1 screamed bloody murder one time when I offered it to her and didn't realize it was 'soapy'. DD2 takes it fine. Never complains and I only realize it was 'soapy' when I go to put her bottle in the sink.

I think scalding (heating to a certain temp, can't recall what) is the only way to prevent. It has to be done immediately after expressing though so not sure how you would do that at work.

In reading over at the EP page on BabyCenter, it may be chemical oxidation making the milk taste sour instead of excess lipase (which makes it taste soapy or metallic).

I haven't identified a consistency to the problem yet, but it hurt to not be able to use that milk.

For some reason I thought taking lecithin was supposed to help, but after some internetz checking, it would appear that I am on crack. Typical.

At any rate, I found that around month 6 or so of EPing, my milk started to smell like rotten eggs. Because I had suddenly started getting lots of plugged ducts (with no changes in pumping) I began taking lecithin and the egg smell hasn't returned. So I guess I just associated the two.

Also no more plugged ducts. So win/win. (Dear diary....) For serious though, I wonder if there is any connection?
