I'm glad you're doing the helmet! My nephew needed one so badly, but his mother cared too much about what people would think and not enough about how her son would look. He now has an extremely flat head. It stinks that it'll be during the summer, but it'll be worth it when he's finished!!
Yup we have friends whose daughter wore a helmet for a bit and now her head is perfectly shaped. A few years ago it seemed like every other baby in our area had a helmet. I was starting to wonder if a local pediatrician was over diagnosing. I hope his treatment goes quickly. He's such a cutie that I am sure he will still be adorable.

I'm glad you're doing it - I think in the long run, it's worth it. At our 4 month appt our pedi said he had some slight, but symetrical flatness and could refer us to a specialist for a helmet if we wanted. I declined mostly because DH wasn't there, and also because I was hoping that, with him sleeping on his stomach ever night now, it might correct itself. I think it has a bit, but there is still some flatness. We decided we would reassess at the 6 months appt, so I'm anxious to find out if we go this route as well.
My LO has a flat head on one side and doc says he doesn't need a helmet but I am fearful that it will never round out itself. I am wondering if I should get a second opinion. I also agree with everyone else that the time will fly by and LO probably won't even notice. The nice round head will be worth it! Hang in there.
DS was just evaluated for this today, too. They said he has moderate brachycephaly and would benefit from a helmet. We are waiting to see if insurance will cover any of it! I am not looking forward to this in the AZ summer, either. :-(

I hope your insurance pays for it. Luckily we are only responsible for 15% plus deductible for the product. This includes however many visits necessary to service/adjust the helmet as necessary during treatment.
We just heard back and it is 90% covered! So thankful for this!! We will be getting a Doc band (thru Cranial Technologies), is that what you're doing too? When is your LO's fitting? We go back on the 9th for more measurements and then on the 18th for his helmet.
My LO is going to need a helmet to treat his mild-moderate head flatness and asymmetrical head formation. The technical term is cranial remolding orthosis (CRO). We noticed early on (at 2-3 weeks of age) that his head is more flat on his left side, and he prefers to look more to his left. Apparently it's due to the way he was laying in my tummy that caused this.
We have tried to reposition him when he sleeps, put him on plenty of tummy time, adjusted the way we hold him, etc. He was referred to the specialist by his pedi. They did an evaluation a month ago, and we were recommended to do some exercises with him, most of which we were already doing and were told to wait four weeks and see. The four weeks also allowed his neck to get stronger for the helmet in case he needed it (which I knew he would bc his condition was not noticeably improving).
We returned for another scan today. There is some improvement, but not enough at the current rate to eventually fix itself, so a helmet it is. We're returning in two weeks for a fitting.
His condition doesn't affect him cognitively, just physically. He's a healthy boy, and I'm extremely thankful for that. This is a pretty easy fix. I just hate for him to wear this 23 hours a day for three months, which happens to be through the summer months...in NC where the heat can be brutal at times.
Sorry I've been MIA, but glad I popped on this morning. Miles got his Doc Band four weeks ago. They expected an 8 week course of treatment, so we are halfway there (cue Bon Jovi song) and it's been so much easier than I expected.
I painted it and used blingyourband.com for decals.
htle07, I also know someone who has had the helmet and he has the prettiest round head. You'll get through it, and we have ladies on here who will be in the same boat with you to commiserate if needed.
birch113 there is an AW everything thread with tons of pics! Catch us up on Miles! He looks adorable!
The time in the helmet will fly by and the babies won't remember a thing. My dd wore a brace for 8 weeks for hip dysphasia. She got it at about a week old. I cried when we got and I felt awful for her. (And for all the clothes she had and didn't wear) She has no clue she was ever in it!
