So i don't have a lot of baby clothes for a few reasons. 1. We aren't telling the sex so people don't wanna but the "boring neutral colors" and 2. I haven't got much myself because how do I know if they will even fit? What if my baby is 9-10 pounds like my hubby was? Or 5 like I was? Do i need premie, newborn, or bigger sizes? Maybe I am over thinking this... What is your opinion?

I bought one set of onesies, and have no other clothes for my LO yet. I completely get waiting. It is really hot where I live from about April through October so I'm waiting to find cuter summer outfits. I also agree that it is hard to buy clothes when you don't know how big the baby will be.
I have clothes but I'm nervous I don't have enough and even though I have a shower this weekend I'm nervous people are going to buy me cutesy outfits rather then the essentials that I need like onesies and sleepers.

People have given me some - some hand-me-downs and some new as gifts. Newborn size is so teeny! I wouldn't buy much in that size as many babies might not ever fit in to it. I think you are safe buying some basics in 0-3 months.

It makes perfect sense. With my DD I actually guessed her weight & length pretty acurrurately. I took my birth weight and length then added my DH's birth weight and length then averaged them out. I was only off by an inch and off by an ounce or 2. Not sure if it really works but it was fun trying to find a mathematical equation to guess the weight and length.

I am waiting until after my baby shower to buy any additional clothes. We have already received a few onesies. Depending on what we get, I will buy some additional sizes. Then wait to see how big baby is when he decides to make his appearance l.
I feel you on the size thing. I'm short but my husband is 6'9. He was a 10lb baby and super long. I keep seeing things on clearance and wanting to pick things up like right now some cute winter weather clothes, but I have no flipping idea how big this baby will be by winter. I'm going to see what happens at the showers and just fill in with basics afterwards.

I second this. They do outgrow stuff so fast though, so we're really big on consignment clothes. It's good to have some stuff early on so you don't have to worry about shopping with a newborn!

We got pretty much the entire layette from CL for $20, not including a lot a of hand-me-downs from relatives. If there's a freecycle group in your area, you could also put out a call. I've also read that it's better to buy and clothe them a little bigger, as they don't care if their clothes are baggy. Is there a Once Upon A Child store near you?
I've been wondering this exact thing! I've been trying to find outfits for the hospital, and since we're team green it's a little difficult already, much less knowing if we're going to have a 6 lb baby or a 9 lb baby. LOL.
This was something I mulled over a lot-how much clothes to buy and what sizes. I didn't have very much NB stuff, and no preemie stuff. I was convinced LO was going to be big, even though he consistently measured lower than 45 percentile at every growth scan. That said, at my shower, I was given 6 NB pjs w/feet (sleepers?? not sure what correct term is!) and 2 packs of 3 Gerber sleep n play outfits (amongst other clothes, but those were used most). LO weighed 6lbs, 7oz and was 21" long, so needed NB stuff! Over the next month, more things were added to the collection, but those were pretty much my staples. At 7 weeks, and 9.5lbs now, LO is just starting to wear size 3 months.
If I were to advise a new mom, those sleepers and sleep n plays were most useful, and I would say plan to have at least 3-4 of each in NB and 0-3 months to start with, and add as you go. I also got a lot of use out of two fleece zip up jackets with hoods and socks, 3 pairs of fleece pants and long sleeved onseies. As he got older, LO lived in fleece pants w/long sleeved onesies (they came in 3 or 4 a pack) for the most part during the day. Granted, I do laundry 2-3x a week so that helps not need a ton of stuff! You can hold off buying the cutesy outfit sets. I also didn't take tags off or wash anything until I gave birth...partly superstitious and also so I could return NB stuff for larger size if needed. H did it the day LO was born so all the NB stuff was ready when we came home.
Another thing that has been super useful are the Halo Sleepsacks. I have two-keeps baby warm at night and easier to use as a swaddle.
Are you having a shower? Even if you don't register for clothes, people LOVE to buy baby clothes! We got a ton from NB-24 months. The majority covers ages 3-6 months, but I have at least 6 outfits for each age group. Pretty awesome!
You can find packs of stuff for not that much-I just bought a pack of 4 onesies for $14 and two fleece pants for $15 from Carters. The Sleep n Plays are like 3 for $12. Good luck!!!

Check out lucieslist.com, she has done a wonderful job putting together a list of must haves for a newborn.
You really won't need that much when the baby is first born. I brought a newborn onesie and a 0-3 month onesie to the hospital for DS. I knew he was going to be on the bigger side. You can have a few things in each size at home and then once baby is here you can get more. Honestly after a few days you'll probably be looking forward to an outing and buying baby clothes is a great excuse.

eliz77 thanks that was a lot of great info. Yeah i have already had 3 showers but not many clothes from them because no one wants to buy gender neutral stuff. =-/
Thanks everyone for all your ideas and insight. Now i have some good ideas.
I had a good-sized baby, not huge, but 8 lb 4 oz and 20.5". She fit NB for quite a while and the 3 month stuff was BIG on her. That's considering that she grew really fast, too. She didn't get much wear out of NB outfits but we used a lot of NB onesies. She was an August baby and we don't have AC, so I didn't really use sleepers with her that early, but those would be a good idea to have, too.
What I did was wash quite a bit of the 0-3 month stuff I had (I didn't wash anything bigger because of PGAL brain), washed a NB and a 3 mo. outfit to take to the hospital, left the tags on the rest of the NB stuff and did that laundry when we got home. I understand the overthinking. It's so hard to know what to do for an unknown situation.
IMO, if you plan to laundry really often (like, daily), just get a few NB things and the rest 0-3. If you think you'll have a hard time finding time to do laundry (this is where SOs can be a big help!), get a bit more NB stuff so you can get by for a few days at a time then buy more after LO is here if that size is a good fit. If you don't care at all about baggy clothes, just get 0-3 and buy smaller after LO is here if he/she is tiny and really, really swims in 3 month.

Since this is a girl, and I have 2 boys, we are starting from scratch with clothes. I got a few onesies and sleepers in newborn size then mostly stuff in the 3 month size range (0-3mo, 3mo, etc depending on the brand). Both my boys were right around 8lbs which is on the upper side of NB size clothes but they both fit into them past the weight "limit". They will always grow into something that's a little big. I never bought any preemie clothes- I figured if I needed them, I would have family grab a few must haves when the baby arrived. I think not overdoing it on NB size stuff is smart in case baby is too big. You can always shop online from your hospital bed

DD was 8 pounds 9 ounces and 21 inches long and she fit in to newborn for a few weeks to a month before I switched to the 0-3 so I think most people will do well to have some newborn sizes. If you get pajamas go for the zip ups instead of the ones with like 30 buttons. Nobody has time for all those buttons at 2am IMO.

I would get maybe a few NB items just in case because they go up to 8lbs. You will probably need more bigger things. I didn't have my shower yet so I am not sure what I need. I was 6lbs and H was almost 9, so I am guessing my lil guy will be around 8ish.
