OBGYN: What should I be wary of?

Hi! I'm so glad I found you guys and made my way over! (Formerly southernredandwhite85) A little bit of background info that might be helpful to know: I'm healthy, under 35, and we have been TTC for 6 months. I haven't taken hormonal birth control in over 5 years. I can't remember a time when my period didn't come within the 3-4 days that I expected it, but I have only been tracking ovulation for 3-6 months.

In terms of getting KTFU, I chart through FF, have been off and on using OPKs, and temp regularly. Last month I never got a +OPK or had a sustained temp shift and therefore don't think I ovulated. FF didn't think so either. I didn't worry because from my understanding anovulatory cycles can happen every once in a while. This month, I got +OPKs two days in a row but had no clear sustained thermal shift. Two anovulatory cycles in a row worry me so I called my OBGYN to ask if I needed to see them or if I should go straight to an RE. She said an RE typically requires a referral and if I came to see them they may be able to "give me medicine". After reading from you lovely ladies that medication should be prescribed and monitored by an RE, my question is: What should I be wary of at my OBGYN visit? Prescriptions for medication of any kind? What advice should I really shy away from taking when it comes from an OBGYN v. an RE? I hope this post makes sense and I apologize for its length. Thank you in advance!

I'm not sure I'd go see my doctor for two annovulatory cycles, but to answer your question, I would be careful what medications you take. I know Clomid is a no-no. In general, I would think most fertility type drugs you'd want to see a RE for.

The best advice I can give is the one I see here all the time - your OB is good at keeping you pregnant, an RE is best for getting you pregnant.

Can you link your charts?

It sounds like they would try and push Clomid on you, so I wouldn't entertain that at all w/ an OB. With only trying 6 months I think you should still give it some time. If you are having an annovulatory cycle and hit 60 days w/o a period and -HPT you can take Provera from your OB to jump start a new cycle, but that is about it. I would keep charting until you hit a year.

The only thing that the GYN could/should prescribe would be metformin for possible insulin resistance/PCOS. If you are concerned about PCOS, it'd be a good thing to talk to the GYN about.

Otherwise, I wouldn't be overly concerned with 2 anovulatory cycles.

Thank you all so much for your responses! I feel so much better knowing that two anovulatory cycles shouldn't necessarily be reason for alarm. I am also glad to hear that my instinct to say hell no to Clomid from an OBGYN was right. I have completely "normal" periods and no symptoms of PCOS and have had my thyroid checked recently. I just hope these are two funky cycles and I'm worried for nothing. Again, thank you so much!

If you're not seeing a shift, I want to make sure, how do you temp?  Orally or vaginally?  If orally, are you a mouth breather by chance?  Sometimes that can screw up temps.

But that is simply a stab in the dark because I haven't seen your FF.  Care to link it?

Link your charts. If your period is coming "on time" I'd doubt your cycles are anov, but I won't state it with too much authority without seeing your chart history first.
