*****I put the trigger in just because I figure you guys might not want to read about babies having surgery. It's a common procedure but it's a big deal. Stop reading now if that will bother you, but prayers are appreciated. *******
So Amelia had a regular ultrasound of her brain scheduled yesterday because she's a Preemie. It's part of routine follow up. Everyone was shocked by the appearance of fluid building up in her brain. It's called hydrocephalus, which means water on the brain. The short version is that her brain should be absorbing excess fluid and it isn't. Pressure can build up, which could cause brain damage. She is getting an mri as I type this and that will show if there is damage.
Tomorrow, they will put in a shunt which will drain the excess fluid into her stomach area to be absorbed. The procedure is very common and is done to make things work the way they are supposed to. She shows no signs of this at all, which is great news. They caught it early, which is also great news.
They think it was caused by the infection she had about a month ago. They suspected meningitis. This is a complication of that, most likely. I'll update as we know more, but this is not life threatening. I asked about a million times. Thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.
Lots of thoughts & prayers motownthrowdown. I'm sorry that you have to go through this extra stress of surgery after everything you've already been through, but obviously Amelia is a little fighter! Do they say what kind of recovery time to expect and how this will affect how long she has to stay in the NICU?
Prayers are sent your way! I can't imagine the stress you must be under, but that is great to hear that it was caught so early and that she is in such good hands!
You are all in my thoughts. I'm glad they caught it early and that it seems to be very fixable, but I'm sure its so hard to see your baby needing surgery!
Sending lots of thoughts and prayers for baby Amelia and you, Mo! I'm so glad that it was something that was caught early. I think you've really been blessed to have the doctors and providers that are at your hospital; it sounds like they are really on top of things. And Amelia is such a little fighter! Hoping for a quick and easy recovery after the surgery. *hugs*

Oh, I'm so sorry you're going through this, it must be nerve wracking. Thoughts and prayers for your sweet little girl. I hope everything goes well. XO
motownthrowdown, my uncle had this in the 50's and because there was no surgery precedent for it at that time, he lived to be about 9 months and then died. It really shows how far medicine has come that doing a shunt is a common procedure and how thankful I am to not be having a baby sixty to seventy years ago.
