Weekly appointment thread 7/18

@sluttybigb00bz - MH and I recently obtained life insurance and had to have the nurse come to the house. It included a blood draw, urine sample, and health history questions.

It really wasn't a big deal for me. For the urine sample I peed in a cup and left it in the bathroom. She went in the bathroom, poured what she needed into a seal-able test tube then dumped the rest in the toilet.

For the blood draw we sat at the kitchen table and she took samples. Everything came in single-use kits and it was all very clean. It wasn't as weird as I thought it was going to be.

Heading in, what's on your mind? Scared shitless. I'm hoping to see a heartbeat and a little bean in there though.

Why do you need to fast? That is the worst even when you aren't pregnant!

How long do you have to fast? For us our appointment was at 7pm and we just couldn't eat after 3. It will be tougher since you're pregnant (I wasn't yet for our appointment) so hopefully it's only a few hours like ours was.

I am also a tough stick and they always have to use the small butterfly needles on me. Our person came prepared with a standard set as well as the butterfly needles. Our insurance people gave us the nurse's cell phone when we set up the appointment so maybe you can get your persons number and let them know you're a tough stick just to be sure they come prepared. I meant to give our nurse a heads up and forgot, but since she came prepared it didn't matter.

Heading in, what's on your mind? I am thinking about going with a midwife this time, rather than the OB I had last time. I think I'll just be getting a requisition for blood work, nothing major at this appointment.

edited to add: Peed in a cup, and got a requisition for an ultrasound at 7 weeks and blood work whenever I want it.

Heading in, what's on your mind? It's just intake paperwork and labs with a nurse. I'm hoping my iron is low and I can start an iron pill which would give me a little more energy. This fatigue is insane. I can barely walk. Iron rich foods are not on my edible list lately. I also hope my first real appointment is soon. They will schedule it at this appointment.

* Appointment Update!

We had a great appointment with the OB, did a vaginal ultrasound and found a little baby (it looks like a crab, a cute one though) with a strong HB of 176 bpm! I am so relieved. This is finally starting to feel real. My Dr. said everything looks great and I'm measuring within my LMP time frame. My EDD is actually 2/25/16 based on LMP instead of O so I'm technically not part of this board anymore but I'm staying unless you kick me out! I have a feeling baby may decide to come in early March anyway. =)

Will you have a ultrasound? Yes! I was not expecting it, so I was happy.

Heading in, what's on your mind? I was relieved to see ONE baby with a HB of 140 ish.

They officially kept my EDD of 3/1, which is what I suspected it would be.

Don't have an appointment this week, but I am working on life insurance for DH and I. I was kinda weirded out about them coming to house, not sure why and DH and I both worked in home health. I used to go out to people's homes to draw blood all the time. @sluttybigboobz definitely let them know you're a hard stick ahead of time and maybe they'll send someone who's better at lab draws. Hopefully though since that's probably all they do, they're pretty good at it. Also, you can drink fluids while "fasting", probably stick with mostly water. And warm up a towel in the dryer and wrap it around your good arm (if you have a better one) for about 10 min+ before they draw.

Heading in, what's on your mind?  What's on all of our minds...healthy baby, healthy heartbeat.  My "real" appointment is next Monday.  We scheduled the u/s early so DH could attend (he's going out of town for 2 weeks).

Good idea! I'll pick some up the next time I go shopping. I'm not a huge cereal fan, but it would probably be good dry as a snack.

@sluttybigb00bz - There shouldn't be a limit on how much water you can drink. It was the one thing we were allowed to have during our 4 hour fast and she told us to drink a lot. Mainly to make sure we actually had to pee, but also I believe it helps your blood flow during the draw more easily if you're well hydrated.

I actually had to redo my blood draw because I had drank too much water and it skewed my results so be careful!

Grape Nuts are super yummy on top of yogurt too, similar to a parfait.

Weeks/Days: I thought I was 7w2d based on LMP; I measured at 6w4d

Will you have a ultrasound? I did. We saw the tiniest, fastest little heartbeat!!! It was magical.

Heading in, what's on your mind? I just wanted confirmation that everything was good and on track. And it was!! The tiny heartbeat was a huge bonus. I haven't stopped smiling.

On my mind: I'm annoyed to go to this since I just had a baby last year and don't need to be told to not eat/do certain things. I'm going to be so close to an u/s machine! Still 2 more weeks until I see the dr.

They said the fast will be 4-6 hours. Ughhhh I eat every 1-2 hours (I'm eating for 3!!!!) LadyNymeria thanks for the tip. I've had techs fail to draw my blood and have to call in a more experienced tech for another try so I will be sure to give a heads up.

Just don't fast and tell them you're pregnant. I was nursing a ton when I did my life insurance exam and fasted. When the tech arrived I was about to pass out and he told me I should've just eaten and told him and he would have noted it

Update:

All went well! We got to hear our gummy bear's heartbeat!! 130 bpm. So sweet! Measuring right at 7 wk 1 day so just one day ahead of due date. We are so thankful.

Had my ultrasound yesterday, baby has a healthy heartbeat (134). Yay! There's a discrepancy with the EDD, though. LMP shows EDD 3/8 but baby is measuring at 6w/5d and according to the dating scan, EDD is 3/13. My first prenatal visit is Monday and we'll see what the doc has to say. Ultimately, though, baby will come when he's good and ready.

(Yes, I labeled the baby "he". I'm convinced it's a boy. Our neighborhood has nothing but boys, so I'm just going in expecting a little guy.)
