Just wondering whether anyone has tried hypnotherapy and whether you found it worked?
I used to get it as part of my weekly therapy. It was to help me deal with low self esteem, anxiety and negative thoughts.
Basically I would go into a really deep state of relaxation and while there, the therapist would get me to think about a really positive time in my life, when something had happened to make me feel brave and strong and proud. I had to focus on those feelings, thoughts, colours, sounds etc while they put positive thoughts into my subconscious.
The point is that when you are in a highly anxious state, feeling crappy or being hard on yourself, you are meant to be able to recall this positive memory from your subconscious, instead of dwelling on the negative.
When it was over, I would feel pretty calm and positive for a few days but as soon as a negative thought popped in my mind I would find it impossible to get that positive memory the therapist had "planted" in my mind back up to the surface.
I really want to be able to do this and am quite open minded (basically, I'll do anything to feel better!) so does anyone have experience of this, good tips or advice?
Do I just need to practice it or is it a load of nonsense?
That's so funny you brought this up cause I was just talking about it with friends. I see it as someone planting the seed but then you following up with the work. When I did it, my therapist made me a tape. That's right, a tape...that's how long ago it was!! He did just what you described during the sessions but I'd have to listen to the tape every night. It was something I had to keep up with or it wouldn't last.
Thanks flcl - that is so interesting because I have a CD my therapist made for me too....but I've never used it. Maybe your right - practice might actually make perfect! I may just dig it out and give it a listen.
