Apologies if this has already been discussed.
I am really torn on what to do. We definitely want some sort of genetic testing, but are unsure if we should do the sequential screening with the NT scan and/ or do the panorama test.
According to our insurance, they will cover either test if the doctor orders it. The nurse said the doctor won't make the panorama a mandatory test. So I guess I'm confused because if the doctor orders the test, which they would have to in order for me to do it, insurance should cover it?
In conclusion, if panorama isn't covered then we will obviously just do the sequential screening. Could you share your experiences/thoughts/what you plan on doing.

We're not doing any genetic screening, but if we were to do so our insurance covers anything considered needed by the clinic (so anything referred by doc is covered). Just like the u/s, the OB/MW would have to put in a medical note for it, which would indicate to me that it was covered.
However, I don't work in insurance, so I can't say that with 100% certainty and will wait for other's comments
This is admittedly something I very much need to learn more about. I know some of it is considered standard and some quite controversial. I need to get to googling.
Which one is the one where they take a part of the placenta? I know I won't be doing that one because I've read multiple places that it can (even just slightly) increase the risk of miscarriage.

Last time we did nothing. This time, we're planning to do the Verifi test because now I'm 35 and it's covered. As far as I know it's a simple low-risk blood test and it takes about 2 weeks to get results. We also had to do a level II ultrasound because MH has a congenital heart defect so we checked for that and will do again this time.

That is CVS or amniocentesis where it is invasive. I will not be doing those either.
The panorama is a non invasive blood test that is a one time test. It's fairly new from what I understand.

This may be a rapid post and run, sorry in advance! All cfDNA tests are done at the same lab, just under different names. They all have a lower rate they bill you if insurance doesn't cover it. I was just discussing this with someone this week and I will have to look up to be sure but one of them (Panorama??) has the lowest rate and I *think* was under $100.
That was probably not helpful at all. Lol. I will look up the post and update later.
We don't do any prenatal testing. They all have a pretty high false positive rate and I'm just not willing to pay for any of them out of pocket.

Testing is different in Ontario. With my dd I did an IPS screening. They do an ultrasound and blood work between 11.5-13.5 weeks. Then another blood test around 16 weeks. They take all those results and give you the odds of something being wrong. By then you're about 18+ weeks pregnant. I hadn't wanted to do it but my dating ultrasound showed a soft marker so I did it. This time, I'll probably do it again to get a chance to have another ultrasound for reassurance. Plus with my history I'm worried about a higher chance of something being wrong. I'll probably discuss it with my ob today.

Ah I had time to look it up. The Maternit21 has the cheapest guaranteed rate for insurance rejection and it's $160. Others charge on a sliding scale so it could be less or it could be more.
We did not do it the first time. I wish we had, because I got a call the day I returned to work that we had to go to a specialist for a sweat test because my son had markers for CF. He was negative, but not knowing that we were both carriers made it a surprise, stressful, and really sent my PPA into overdrive.
It wouldn't have changed our minds about anything, knowing, but it would have helped us be prepared, if that makes sense. I would have paid the $200 for that piece of mind in retrospect.
This time, we've had the whole battery, but besides the NT, won't be doing anything more. We have a 25% chance of a baby with CF, but there's no real way to know that in utero, so why risk, you know?

I plan to do one of the simple blood tests if I make it to 10 weeks. I like the maternt21 test best just from what I've read but I haven't asked my doctor about it yet. I would really like to do it though!
My practice does the NT and panorama. I was told that everything was covered except maybe the panorama but it if wasn't it would max cost $250. I was really on the fence about it so the midwife said schedule it bc it's easier to cancel than try and schedule last minute. Now that it's on the books I am leaning towards it. Also the midwife said the panorama test (and the others like that) have a much lower false positive rate than the NT on its own. That was one of my biggest concerns as well.
My doctor recommends Verifi over the NT scan due to the accuracy of the former relative to the latter. I am now 35 and even though my insurance will cover Verifi, I've maxed out my first dollar benefits for lab work and diagnostic testing for the year. I called the company that provides the Verifi test and the max out of pocket I will pay under their Peace of Mind program is $99. I will still have the quad screen around 16-18 weeks and of course the anatomy scan. I believe I will be having the blood drawn for the Verifi test tomorrow.

I've only had the quad screen done with my other 2, but I might do the NT scan this time. I'm going to talk to my OB about it at my appointment Friday.

****Trigger Warning, Loss Mentioned****
I have no bloody clue. I'm hitting magic 35 in less than 2 months, so I know that means changes in testing. I know I'm not doing CVS or amnio. Other than that, I'll probably just follow along with doc recommendations. I know we're doing the NT scan though. I will be discussing what sort of testing that we'll be doing at my 1st appt on 8/31. I need to ask DH if he wants to do the more intensive genetic counseling like last time. We got several extra u/s to search for defects. He had a late term loss at 32 weeks with his ex-wife due to a chromosomal defect. He cried during the anatomy scan when we learned our LO was healthy. I know he feels better this time, but is still worried Encore won't be healthy.

Last time I did the panorama and skipped the NT screening. (Doing the same this time). I am 34 and for insurance purposes it actually costs me less to do the genetic testing instead of an ultrasound.
We did the NT scan with the girls but couldn't do panorama because twins. This time I'll do the NT and panorama tests.
We do the genetic testing because DH has a condition he wants to check on. I guess with IVF/FET babies it's pretty standard to check too.
I understand why you wouldn't be able to do cfDNA tests with twins but do you know if people do it anyway? I seem to remember seeing on TD a mom who knew that at least one of her twins was a boy from the Y chromosome but she wouldn't know if it was just one or both until the anatomy scan. Just a random question and I'm curious! Theoretically if they found something wrong they just wouldn't know which baby, right? This was probably 2 years ago too so I'm sure things have changed since then.
I'd like to have the testing done because my H's side of the family has a history of some chromosomal issues and I have a genetic heart condition (and my genetic testing was inconclusive as to whether I would pass it to children). It'll be up to my doctor whether she thinks its a necessary test. I'll be asking next week when we go in for the first appointment.
I read on another board that Verifi will knock the price down to $99 if your insurance wont cover- I'm not sure if thats right.

I'm 38 and my insurance covers the blood test and my doctor said we'd be doing it, I think at my appointment next week. The NT scan is also already scheduled for 12+3 so we'll see what happens I guess.

Yep, that is correct! Its called The Peace of Mind program that jess9802 mentioned above!
Because of our Jewish Heritage we had blood tested for taysachs (sp?) when I was pg with my first, it was negative so dont have to go through any testing again. I know there are a few other backgrounds that are encouraged to test for things but she's almost 6 so I really dont remember.

So I called my insurance again for clarification. They completely cover the tests for the sequential screenings and NT scan. They will only cover panorama if I were to meet a certain list of criteria, which at this time I do not.

You are welcome! I wish they could be more straightforward and just give you a number she said whatever she pays counts towards her insurance out of pocket as well.
If the panorama/Harmony test was covered, we would do that, but they aren't. We're doing the sequential screening with the NT scan, which is what we did with our other two kids (100% covered). I've already done the first blood draw, and my ultrasound is a week from today. I'm hoping they give us a guess at the sex while we're there. That day is my birthday, so I might mention it to see if it helps. They gave us guesses with #1 and #2, and they were right both times.
With my first I did the NT scan (which he was too big for so the u/s was useless) and sequential screening (I think that's what it was) that are offered by the state. It was fully covered by insurance.
This time around I'm 35 and my OB offered me the Panorama, Verifi, MaterniT21 and/or the "traditional" NT scan/bloodwork. I did the Panorama on Monday and expect results in 7-10 business days. We have new insurance with United effective 8/1 so I spent literally hours on the phone with them and my doctor's office to confirm the cost. I was told there would be nothing out of pocket.
Also, just want to add I had to stop halfway through typing this because DS managed to get the dishwasher open and was pulling out the steak knives. FTMs...this is what you have to look forward to!
