Oh, I was pretty out of it because I slept terrible the night before, water broke when I got home from work before dinner and I didn't think to eat before going to the hospital, and then I delivered in the early morning after being up all night. I think my exhaustion was from lack of food, sleep and pushing.
You're not the first person I've heard say this. I'm going to have to remember to eat. Must. eat.
I am going to sneak in some energy bars and I dgaf! The only reason they don't want you to eat is because of the .0001% chance (made that number up) you have to be put under anesthesia and then further, the rare chance that you would then vomit and aspirate. But if you seriously think I'm going to be just fine and have the energy for labor and pushing an entire human being out of my body without any nourishment, you are fucking nuts.
Um, terrifying. Even more reason to avoid the epidural.
DNW to be asked to consent to things while 'out of it'.
Yes but the epidural doesn't make you out of it...mine just made me numb. The pushing a baby out makes you out of it.
Yeah, I was totally aware of pressure just not as much of the pain with the epidural. Having DD and not sleeping at all the day before having DD made me out of it.

I agree, the epidural won't make you feel out of it. The one that makes you loopy is nubain. I was given that after DS was born and there are details of that night I don't even remember. I wanted a natural birth and got everything else instead. Sometimes things get crazy and it's really hard to plan for it.

Does anyone know anything about getting the Hep B shot while pregnant? The one I'm getting at work is a 3 part series. I already got the first one before I knew I was pregnant. I'm due for the 2nd now and the last one is due in January. I googled and some say it's fine to get it while pregnant, others say no.
Fair enough. But I'm sure the drugs don't help matters. DNW.
Ok well good for you. I've had one and I do want, for every baby I ever have.
I loved my epidural, I didn't get it right away and I'm glad I got to experience contractions because I'd always wonder what they were like but that epidural was the greatest thing ever invented the day I had my DS.

I am amazed people do it naturally. The epidural was the most amazing part. I was pretty grouchy with the pain from contractions. They wouldn't let me get it until I went through more of the IV. I felt like I had a positive birth experience.
That makes me happy that you look back fondly on your birth experience! This is exactly why I want to become a doula! I want every woman to be able to look back and think "I had a positive birth experience." Whether that means you went in wanting an intervention-free birth and got it, or you went in not wanting pain meds but glad you decided to get an epidural while in the thick of it, or you went in knowing you wanted an epidural and you got it at a good time. I hate that so many women look back and are upset by things that were forced on them or they weren't "allowed" to do. A doula can help advocate for you when you are in a vulnerable state.
Emergencies and high-risk pregnancies aside, I wish doctors would stop treating every birth as a medical emergency that needs to be completed on the doctors time. The c-section rate is out of control.

Thats awesome! My cousin is in nursing school and wants to become a midwife. Honestly I will never forget the nurses who took care of me during labor, delivery, and post-partum care. Everyone stresses over their choice of OB but they are not the ones who are in the thick of it with you.
Also, for the record, for me it was helpful to go in with an open mind. Labor is so different for everyone. I also had an awesome labor experience and I just went with the flow. I did get an epidural after my pitocin contractions started(those suckers are INTENSE!) and it did not make me out of it. Actually the epidural made me way more with it. I was practically in a trance state before I got it and afterwards I had family in my room laughing and hanging out. I wouldn't change anything about that labor. The actual delivery was another story.

My nurse said "I'm new here! I can't deliver your baby!" I will never forget her. I also managed to get blood all over her scrubs so that was her payback.
I'm glad I made it really far without an epidural with DD because I know for sure I'll sign up for one a little earlier with this baby. I just could not control my breathing right before the epidural and I was shaking like a leaf holding onto the nurse when the anesthesiologist finally made it around to me. I think if things had moved slower maybe I could have managed med-free but it was all happening too fast and it really threw my body off it's pain game. The only way I'd do med-free next time is if I get there too late. I'm sort of worried #2 is going to move too fast.
@aest I have the same fear. I have no basis for it other than hearing stories of people who had fast labors after the first kid. Obviously that has no bearing on what will happen to me!

Eek. Yes, water broke and I was 9 cm within 3.5 hours and had her 2.5 hours after that so 6 hours total. They also had me wait because they didn't realize I was already 9 cm when they gave me the epi so if they hadn't given it to me I imagine I would have had her a little earlier.
Luckily my parents live close to the hospital and traffic shouldn't be difficult to navigate! FX someone is actually home with me when I go into labor though! DD came 1 week early at night so DH was there to drive.

I'll never forget how badly I was shaking right before my epidural. I couldn't control it. It was awful.

The epidural made my labor wonderful as well. I was happy as can be. My delivery was close to a nightmare. I am praying that things work out differently this time as far as the delivery goes. And I don't contribute any of my delivery issues to the epidural because once the pushing began the epi had worn off completely on one side. I get shivers every time I think about that.

I feel you girl. I just started to type some of my delivery issues but I don't want to scare anyone

I'm due for my final Hep B shot at the end of the month and my doc said to postpone until after I've given birth. Her rationale was that the vaccine is known to cause a fever. It's not a live vaccine so I think it's a matter of preference and making an informed decision.
