So my LO went a week EBF, but my nipples can't handle it (latch is still not great) so I need to use bottles for most feeds for now. We have Dr. Brown's with preemie nipples, which he's used to and can eat from well. We're going on a trip soon, and I was hoping to not have to use the insert part just for convenience. I tried a couple other bottles we have, and the flow was too fast (more coughing/choking and leaking/dribbling out of his mouth). At Target I saw a new Dr. Brown's that has a green insert, and it and the collar are designed so that you don't have to use the insert. Perfect, I thought, we can keep the nipples that work without needing all the parts!
Problem is, when I use just the nipple and collar on a bottle without the insert parts, it doesn't work well at all. Every few swallows I have to take the bottle out of his mouth and let the air equalize. Otherwise he's sucking the nipple in - creating a vacuum inside the bottle. Besides LO hating me pulling out the bottle multiple times, it just seems incredibly stupid to have to interrupt feeding that often. I feel a little silly, but is that just how regular bottles work? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks!
Are you using a narrow neck or wide neck Dr. Brown bottle? Have you tried just using the preemie nipple with the entire Target Dr. Brown's setup? I'm not familiar with the new green insert you are using, but all the parts are designed to work together, except nipples are a bit trial and error.

The new green insert is made to either be used or not. Here's a link - it's the narrow neck bottle.
I know what you're talking about the new style with the green insert but I haven't tried one of those yet. The traditional Dr Browns with the blue insert (or perhaps the green ones too with the insert) work great for a lot of people; if you're having issues id just go back to those. To me all of the parts really aren't that bad.

The new ones work just fine with the insert, but I'm quite disappointed in the bottle overall because I cannot make it work without! Which is the whole point! I tried putting the collar on loosely and it leaked all over, of course. I don't really mind all the parts usually, it's just for this trip I was hoping to simplify it. When we get back I'm going to call Dr. Brown's and see if they have some tips. I can't believe they'd sell these if this is really as good as they perform!
