In the hospital we were told not to retract the foreskin for cleaning. They said DS would do that on his own. Our PCP said the same thing at our first checkup and never retracted the foreskin during subsequent visits. When our PCP left to practice emergency medicine we had to find a new doc. We've been to the new practice twice and have seen two different docs. They have both retracted the foreskin. Is this more the norm? We came home today and as we research its apparent that premature foreskin retraction can cause harm. We're both upset and feeling let down by the new doc practice. Is this a reason to change practices or should we just bring it up at the beginning of each appointment? We miss our old doc so much.
AAP says not to retract so DH has a call into the practice to make them aware and voice his concerns. tLex I'm with you - if they aren't up to date it raises a red flag. The doc made some other comments that concerned me as well. I'm just not confident or comfortable with them.
I don't have any experience or knowledge about this, but want to say that if you are the least bit uncomfortable with your pedi, you should switch and find someone you trust. When DS was a baby, our family doctor (who was also DS'sv doctor) moved. The doc who replaced her at the practice didn't seem very knowledgeable about some things relating to DS, and it made us uncomfortable. We switched and have been so happy with that decision. Good luck to you!
Add me to the list of people who know nothing about uncircumcised guidelines, but agrees that if you feel uncomfortable with your pedi, go elsewhere if at all possible. It seems like there's a pretty clear guideline that they totally disregarded & that's not acceptable.

This is your answer - switch to a provider you feel comfortable with and confident in their care.
And you are correct that forced retraction is not appropriate or necessary.
