In my experience they usually have a decent 1"ish padded layer with firm backing that you unfold and lay across the bottom. We have a nuna mini (that I adore) and a 20yo hand me down... too lazy to get up and check brand... and they both have a similar situation.
We take the appropriately sized one on trips for DS to sleep in/have a safe space so I've bought a mattress pad type liner and nice sheets for each.

Ditto. We used the mattress that came with it, and then I bought a quilted sheet to go over the mattress. Sometimes I noticed that the mattress was cold, and I wanted a little more cushion. The quilted sheet worked perfectly! Our's was made out of like a soft fleece...
