I collect coloured glass and I keep it above our cupboards. I would use that space for whatever's going to make you happy when you look up there. In the apartment we lived in before this house we had VERY little storage. I have colourful mixing bowls and kept them up top.
Along these lines, we keep decorative baskets on top of our cabinets, and some wine/liquor bottles that we've liked. The dust in the kitchen is slightly greasy, and a PITA to clean off everything (when I actually bother to do it.) Is this normal? Is ours the only kitchen? /threadjack
mevaroo How funny, I was seriously just having a conversation about that the other night. You're not the only one! Grease from cooking actually causes the surfaces (and items) to get a greasy film.

I know that's what it's from at our house, but I didn't know if a lot of other people experienced this as well. It's so nasty. We even got a better fan to try to minimize how far it spreads or whatever, but it doesn't seem to be helping.
mevaroo Yeah it's pretty gross. And it gets on everything! We brought down a bottle of Khalua from the top of our cabinets and it was covered in it. If there's a way to minimize it, I'd like to know!
And I'm totally stalking this thread because besides liquor bottles, the top of our cabinets are pretty bare, too. I love how yours looks, @joybaby5!
mevaroo, ours is the same. That's why I haven't kept things up there for so long, because it ends up looking gross and that film is so hard to clean off of everything! But I like the way cabinets look with a little something to decorate the top
Of course it would involve electricity (but minimal dusting). I would not recommend lighting the toe kick though... Unless you want to accentuate the dust bunnies and stray cereal pieces.

Try magic eraser? My apartment cabinets were horrible for that greasy film... I never did figure out how to clean it

DH is an electrician, and plans to put fanceh lighting above ours at some point and maybe building the cabinets up a little, and getting glass doors so we can still display things without them getting all greasy/dusty. We'll see when that happens.
Love the uplighting! I'd really like to put some above my cabinets to show off my glass better, but I haven't been able to find a simple way to do it with our space. :/

+1 to what Dreaming said! I used rope lighting in our old apartment above the cabinets. Its not as bright as a professional job would be, but it looks nice and is a fraction of the cost!
