We didn't do anything big for my D's 1st bday and I plan to keep it small again. Big bday planning starts with my D's 4th bday when she actually cares. I'm lazy and hate party planning anyways. I'm actually going to have to follow through with some of my pinterest pins this year for her next bday.
I agree that the first birthday is really more of a celebration of the parent's survival since the kid isn't going to have a clue what's going on, so we will probably do a big labor day/birthday bbq. I'm glad I'm not the only one planning on having alcohol! I can hear my mother already going on about the big party and alcohol for a one year old. No idea about themes yet though.

I may be the only one not planning anything big. For Emma we just went to the park for the afternoon and she opened presents and ate cake. I'm going to plan big for her 2nd birthday because I think she'll be more into it. I'll be going the same route with Jack.

We are planning a party at DH's parents house in the south of France. Like pp mentioned, it's more of a party for the parents. DH has a lot of friends with children so it will be great for everyone to get together. I would love to do a pirate theme but not sure about the cost, however Pinterest is great for money saving ideas.
I've already informed family that we will not be doing birthday parties for our LOs. Between DH and I, we have 38 immediate family members (meaning parents, siblings, sibling spouses, and nieces and nephews). And DHs family invites great aunts and uncles and great-grandparents to everything too. So we'd be looking at about 60 people for birthday parties. Hell no.
But I am considering doing something for DDs first birthday. I like a lot of PP responses about a barbeque. We have our new house we just moved into with a large back yard...that might just be a good idea for us and do a nice big BBQ. But first birthday ONLY!
