Be careful completing birth certificates people. My dad never knew how to spell his name Jeffery or Jeffrey. My gramps liked it pronounced one way and my granny the other. They can't remember what they settled on but his legal documents were a mix of all. Birth certificate one way, license another, passport matched birth certificate, death certificate matched license. I guess that explained why his signature after J-e-f-f was just a line.
My Mom also has crap spelling. My name has an extra letter that changes it's pronunciation. Every English teacher I've ever had has made sure to let me know this.
I will make sure my kids do not go through the same process.

As a teacher, I feel bad for so many of my students because of the names and name spellings that their parents gave them. Although I find my name a little boring and common, at least it is not ever misspelled.

My mom misspelled my youngest 3 siblings names. I'm thankful my dad named me. I wrote 3 of my siblings names on a piece of paper so she didn't spell them wrong.

My husband really wanted to name our daughter (due any day now!) Keira. My main concern was that I thought Kiera and Keira would get interchanged too much...
Many discussions later, turns out he doesn't care how it's spelled (he's a crap speller), and I'm way way happier with just spelling it Kira.
So Kira she shall be, and this article only confirms for me that we made the right decision keeping the "e" out of it altogether!

Wait, aren't those pronounced differently?
I always thought Kira is Keer-a, while Kiera/Keira is pronounced Kee-air-a.

What dreadpiratebuttercup said -- all pronounced KEER-ah, all derivatives of Ciara.
But I guess one of those three spellings is more unambiguous than the others... thankfully the one we're going with, ultimately!
My mom spells my middle name one way and my dad another. It's in Arabic and my dad is the Syrian immigrant so his might be better but he has horrible spelling in general so maybe not. Plus my mom's spelling is on my birth certificate.
My grams had 7 kids and all of them had an issue one way or another. Two out of my mom's 3 brothers have their FN and MN in the wrong order. My mom and a sister were given middle names to honor people but my grandma got the names wrong (I guess she only knew their NNs). My mom got Marjory as a MN but it should of been Margaret and my aunt got Nellie when it should have been Eleanor. The youngest also had her birthday celebrated on the wrong day until she was 16 and saw her birth certificate for the first time. I guess with 7 kids, grams couldn't keep all the birthdays straight.

Congratulations on the pending arrival of your baby girl, crabigator! Kira is a beautiful name, and I prefer the spelling you chose. As you said, it's the least ambiguous and should elicit the correct pronunciation.
