You can get the Tdap after delivery, there are some studies that suggest immunity is passed to the LO through breast milk if the mother gets a vac after delivery. But the best transfer of immunity is when the mother gets the vac in the last 8 weeks of pregnancy and then breast feeds. The CDC has a great website full of information on Pertussis and the vaccine. The incidence rate of pertussis in Ohio is on the rise.

The rrecommendation 19 months ago was after birth and I got it in the hospital with my son. This time around they recommended that I get it after 32 weeks pregnancy to pass the immunities(sp)on. I know st. E offers tdap for free at certain time each day in the hospital. All my family got it 19 months ago so they don't need to do bit again.
chunkymonkeylvr I assume you are referring to St. Elizabeth in Edgewood, KY? I tried looking it up and came up short.
My husband went to get it last week and Walgreens said it would be $63. I looked up on my anthem website and they do not cover it. Really? I mean I will pay if I have to but I would prefer not to pay $63. And then I will have to pay for my mothers too, if her insurance doesn't cover it since I am forcing her to get it. Annoying.

If you get a script from your OB, you could go to your primary care doctor and if you got it there it most likely would count towards your vaccinations/well visits that are usually covered by insurance. I went to Walgreens and the pharmacist gave it to me since I didn't have a PCP at the time and I paid the $60.
Or if you go the Little Clinic in Walgreens/Urgent Care type place, they should be able to code it under your health insurance. You'll just have a co-pay at one those (assuming your insurance covers this).

scarneae If you call St. E's Family Birth place 859-301-2229 they will be able to tell you when they offer the Tdap vaccine for free. I want to say it was every Tuesday from 12-4, but it's been 1.5yrs since I've been pg...
That's crazy. It's supposed to be part of routine vaccinations covered under preventative services by your insurance company. Something doesn't sound right about them not covering it.

If a pharmacist gives it to you, my prescription insurance wouldn't cover it because it's not covered in my prescription plan with the coding it has through the pharmacy. I tried to appeal, but it didn't work. If a medical doctor had given it to me, it would have been covered, because the coding is different and it goes to the health insurance company. If you do get to a PCP to get it, definitely get a script. The few I called to try to get into wouldn't do it without it. Probably since they don't specialize in ob care.

Little Clinic can give the vaccine and it will not count as one of your included well appointments They will also bill it against any insurance you have.

This. They have a couple hours everyday that they are offered. My husband was able to walk down to the labs and get them they day my water broke. scarneae
I'll see if my prescription plan will cover it but my anthem health insurance doesn't cover it at Walgreens and per there website they don't cover it at the doctor's office either. The little clinic at Kroger is like $90. I will try St E, if not I will just pay.
me too! What kills me is a good number of the parents that are not vaccinating their kids are supposedly highly educated people. Where are they finding this evidence against vaccinnations?

I've been reading up on all the vaccine stuff. Today on the news I heard that even with the MMR a 1 yr old is only 93% covered. So all these silly unvaxed kids are definitely endangering even the vaxed kids. Grrrr!

I take that back not silly unvaxed kids-- they can't help it. It's the silly parents...

Since we've been talking about Vaccines, I thought I'd share this. I work in healthcare. When you first start at the hospital you are required to prove your vaccine history or have blood drawn. I came back as not being MMR immune and had to get re-vaccinated within 14 days of starting work. It was a 2 part vaccine. So, if you're going in for Tdap and flu, you might want to ask your docs about the MMR as well.
Just go to walgreens and get the tdap, it should be covered under preventative. No need for an rx.
Apparently, Pharmacists are licensed to administer the vaccine, but if you get the vac from the Pharmacist it is not covered by many insurance companies.
However, if you go to Walgreens/CVS and visit the nurse practitioner, it is covered (so long as the clinic is in network). Same works for the Flu shots.

The Walgreens clinic gave me the run around for the TDAP when I was pregnant. Went in without a script and waited 45 minutes to see them and then they wouldn't give me the shot because I was pregnant. It might have been around the time the CDC had updated the recommendations so maybe they're more relaxed about it now.
I asked my dr about getting the MMR at 9 months. She said not necessary but watch the news and if we see anything here, they might change their rec. Well let's hope my kid isn't the first... Wth.
