Time to start packing!

Well, sort of.  H got the job!  The guy would have been crazy not to hire him.  He wouldn't find anyone else with H's expertise in this specific area.  We just got a call while we were at my parent's house last night so he didn't answer it because they don't know too much yet. We listened to the message on the way home.  So H is calling him this morning to get details on salary, timeline for moving, etc.  Unless it is just too little money then I'm strongly encouraging H to take it.  We will be sad to move but it is a new adventure for us and I think now is a great time.  H obviously isn't having much luck with the job search so this could give him very good skills.  It would be temporary but I would also get to stay home for a little while at least.  

I teach a biology class that has an external assessment at the end of the year and they are always looking for graders so I applied.  They send you test papers from all around the world and you score them and get paid.  It wouldn't be a ton of money but could probably cover car payments for the year and it is all at home and only 2 months out of the year.  I'm also going to look into tutoring or subbing one day a week.  Again, not much money but a little.  

One down side is the cost of living out there.  Housing is really the only difference so we will probably only be able to afford a 2 bedroom. So a couple of questions for you:

For those of you that have kids share rooms, how do you do it?  What is the best method to get as much sleep as possible?  

Also, since money will be tight, I need some of your best budget tips.  

Also, thanks for letting me talk about this here.  I can't really share too much with people IRL yet and you guys can ignore me easily if you want to.  But you are also very good at giving support and advice. I've never moved before, especially not with two kids.  I don't know how I'm going to do it but I know that I will.

Hmmm... good budget tips:

1) reduce cell phone/cable/internet bills if at all possible.
2) meal plan based on what's on sale that week
3) Budget Bytes is a good website for budget friendly and yummy recipes
4) cut coupons

Congratulations! I hope that you'll enjoy your new home! I have a love/hate relationship with moving. However, it's always awesome to discover a new city and all the new activities you can do by yourself or with the kids. I do recommend finding something to do outside the house to meet new people, whether it's just an exercise class or something else better suited to your interests.

As far as housing, maybe you could look into a condo or another shared arrangement that would allow you to still have three bedrooms? If not, who are we kidding it's not like anyone is getting much sleep no matter the sleeping arrangements...

As for budget items
1) reduce cell and cable bills

3) do not eat out a lot. We limit it to 2 times a week. It helps us save money on ML.

Thanks everyone! We have been looking at housing options for a while and we both decided that we would rather live in the city where H will be working. It's not a huge city but a pretty large college town. It has 2 targets and 1 costco if that helps with size. But the surrounding towns are pretty crappy although cheaper. We talked a lot about it but we decided a nicer, smaller place close to his school in a very cool city is better than living in a larger house further away in a crap area. Part of the appeal of this job is that we would be living in a city that is voted one of the best places to live and we would like to experience that knowing that this is a temporary arrangement. We have found some nicer condos with 2 bedrooms and a couple of townhomes but houses are hard to come by. We would also be downsizing to 1 nice car instead of two older cars so H could ride his bike most of the time if we lived closer.

And it's Colorado!! Time to break out the skis. I wonder if I could ski with the ergo on? Kidding moslty.

tribute17, Congrats Girl! That is awesome that you guys decided to take the plunge. Colorado is a beautiful place to live and Midwestern nice sort of attitudes. I hope you like it. I don't think the boys sharing a room at this point is too big of a deal. Perhaps finding a place to rent for a year to really get to know the place isn't a bad idea. That way you can really get a feel for it and decide where you really want to sink into/schools etc? I know moving twice is unappealing, but that way you can really check things out.

xanthepants, we know that this is a temporary job going in. It's a post doc position which usually lasts on average 2-3 years. After that I don't think there are too many options for jobs for him there. Denver would have lots more jobs for both of us so our goal would be to end up there. We are just stuck where we are. I go to work every day wishing I could stay home or at least have stayed home longer. He stays home every day wishing he could work. I think over time it would lead to resentment from both of us no matter how understanding we tried to be. I feel like I can't complain about working because I know he would trade me. I also feel like if we didn't at least try then we would always wonder what our life might have looked like if we had taken the job.

I guess it's not official yet since we don't know salary. There is a minimum where we really can't make it work so hopefully it is more than that.
