That bumpHQ thread on parenting is crazy!
On a completely unrelated note, I would love to ask some work-related advice. If anyone around here speaks a second language? My boss wants me to become conversational enough in Spanish over my 6 week (unpaid) leave that when I return I can answer client phone calls and give basic legal advice. I've never taken any Spanish classes (started Rosetta Stone recently) and am hesitant to commit myself to any type of immersion program while on leave.
If I really give it my best effort, do you think this is possible? I hate my job, but need to come back to some sort of job. I plan to eventually resume job in, but we can't afford for me to get fired or have a gap in income. Would you undertake this proposal or should I spend all my effort job hunting over leave?

(I majored in linguistics in college just as an aside before I jump into this.)
I really think being able to master a language conversationally in three months is ambitious without immersion, and even then it probably would be tough. It's going to be as much about you being able to speak it as it is going to be listening and formulating responses on the fly, which IMO is the hardest part of language acquisition. To learn enough to be able to comfortably work like that you're going to need to hunker down and do a LOT of studying, I'm talking over 40 hours a week dedication (which is how UN interpreters train). Even finishing the Rosetta Stone programs, you won't have enough without some interaction and conversational practice and that's going to take a lot of time away from you taking care of your child.
I just don't see that being possible when you're also taking care of the child unless you're in a bilingual household and already have some conversational Spanish skills.

I just realized you don't even have three months but six weeks...yeah, that's definitely not going to happen in that short amount of time. It'll be a good start, but you would need a ton more time unless you've got some serious dedication and follow through.
Language acquisition is not easy as an adult, unfortunately.
Network, to offer legal advice requires more than just conversational proficiency. And six weeks isn't even enough for real conversational proficiency. I am conversationally fluent in 5 languages and can read in several others and I still won't translate official documents for my work or give any kind of meaningful advice.

Thanks everyone. I thought it was a very ambitious goal. Over the past few years my boss has gone through periods where she mentions I'm not a good fit because I don't speak Spanish. It's frustrating because she's known since she hired me that I don't. I think I will double down on job hunting instead.

It's also your break time where you are recovering from a vaginal delivery or 8 weeks for a cs. You will not be sleeping and exhausted for at least 4 weeks. You are also getting paid not to work. I wouldn't do it.
