Catching up... I will help my kids pay for college, as much as I can. I have so much student debt I am not sure it will ever be paid off. I FF and wish I could BF, and I don't care how anyone else feeds their babies.
My UO (I already said this on my J12 board, but I can't think of another one): Cats are gross. We had 4 cats at one point when I was a kid. They piss on things, the puke everywhere, they get hair everywhere. Then they dig around in their nasty litter box and walk on your counters and dining room table. No thanks.
I think DH and I will end up covering part to most of college. We come with different experiences, my parents covered all my college expenses and his covered none. As we've talked through I think we see the pros and cons of both ways and will end up meeting in the middle by covering a portion and then having child take on some of the debt. I really don't think there is ultimately a right or wrong way to go about it. You just have to figure out what works best for your family.
I can be judgy toward some moms that choose not to bf before they even try it. And I have a friend that I judge bc she's in her 30s, has a little history of modeling, and is so obsessed with what her body is going to look like after baby. She doesn't even seem excited that she's having a baby. My UO: I don't think Americans should be "forced" to learn Spanish like kids being taught in elementary school. An elective class in high school, fine. Having English and Spanish versions on food at the grocery store, not cool. I feel like we are being asked to learn a new language to adapt to the Spanish speaking population that keeps growing. If I moved to France I would learn their language not vice versa.

I think you'd have to admit that animals in general are gross. I absolutely love animals, but let's face it...dogs aren't immune to licking their own asses, eating random shit they find, and then coming in and giving you a big old kiss on the face. And the majority of the hair issues in my house are from the one dog, not the two cats.

"forced"? Yeah, let's not "force" useful knowledge on our children at the age they are most capable of absorbing it. What a silly idea.

Animals in general are gross, yes. Dogs chew, they drool, more fur. They bark. You can't go on a long weekend away without worrying about them. I could never have another pet again and be happy. Like, I don't even want a fish. My responsibility right now is maxed out.

This is where we are. My parents paid for mine and DH's didn't pay for his. We definitely agree there is a middle ground that might work best for all of us. We have college accounts set up for both boys but we aren't going to bust our asses to put as much money in there that they will need. We'll do what we can, when we can, and that will be there to help them if they need it.

This. We will help as much as we can and have started saving but I know it won't be enough with the rising costs.

Agree with your opinion on cats. Don't forget that they're creepy.

I love you@aimeefarrahfowler, I also think cats are gross and also sneaky and mean
It's partly because I'm afraid I will be judged by others and partly because I'm stubborn and spiteful as hell. My mom has never been a "fan" of BF and told me every chance she got while I was pregnant that I would never be able to BF because I'm not well endowed. (Yes she is that smart!) Then once DS was here and I was able to BF successfully it was that I would never last once he had teeth and presumably would start biting. So now I'm kind of the little kid stomping my feet doing whatever it takes to prove her wrong.
I totally do this!! Lol. My MIL swearing we would cave was my #1 reason for being team green!!
Proving my MIL wrong and/or doing everything the opposite of what she would do is generally my goal in life.
Just because we are talking about cats and I just saw this...purritos!
I like cats and have one but I do think it's gross that they dig around in their litter boxes and then walk all over the place. My husband doesn't mind if the cat is on the table or counter, but I sure as shit do.

As far as college I plan to help as much with college as possible - I didn't realize that would turn out to be the UO. DH was paid for, but did have a scholarship and spent a lot of his time on the swim team. My parents couldn't afford to help much, but they let me live with them and not pay rent and helped me with food money. That way I could afford school with the money I made. Grad school was paid for as a work benefit!
I didn't even try to breastfeed. Judge away!!! I had no reason not to try when DS was born. Looking back on it, I made the right choice. I had my teens and early 20's robbed by being clinically depressed. I knew right away to look for signs of PPD. I know that if all the feedings fell only on me (I know I'd be bad at pumping to have DH help), I would have slipped through the cracks of depression again. That being said, take your boob out in public to feed, I don't care!
We already have a college fund going. I had to pay for college myself, and ended up leaving after a year. I didn't want to deal with student loans. DH has a shit ton of student loans that seem like it will never be paid off. I want my kids to have it better than me. So I will do what I can to pay for his college.

I was born and raised in Miami & if you don't speak Spanish you get nowhere. Nowhere. You HAVE TO BE bilingual in Miami. Besides, why wouldn't anyone want to know multiple languages? I talk to DS in Spanish a lot. It wasn't a conscious decision, it just happened because I do speak so much Spanish, but it's great for him to know. And if I can learn any other languages and pass those on as well, you better believe I will.

Agreed! I think kittens are cute but beyond that I also think cats are gross. I know my dog can be gross too sometimes but he certainly does go on our counters or table or in my closet. We don't even let him on the couches!

And food labels in two languages?! How inconvenient for you to have see Spanish words in your grocery store! In 'murrica!
You know the US has no official language, right?
I can't even with this.
Google says English is Americas national language. And Google knows all.

From USA.gov:
Official Language of the U.S.
There is no "official" language for the United States, although some individual states list English as their official language. If you would like the United States or your state to adopt an official language, you should contact your elected officials.
There's also a big button on the page that says "Espanol" if you want to read it in Spanish. How does that make you feel?
Judge me because I want my kid to learn every language out there. I want my kid to learn all the things. All of them.
I should clarify that it's not that I don't want my kids to learn as much as possible, it's that the US seems to be adapting to the illegals that are in this country. That is my issue.

Conversations about judging feeding, diapering, etc. make me want to scream. This isn't about this group specifically, because it's all over the internet, especially right now with the damn Similac commercial.
I don't think that stuff matters in the grand scheme, but I also don't think the ultimate goal of parenting is keeping your kid safe and alive. I'm very angsty over the lack of conversation over the real work of parenting, which should be to raise your kid to be a decent person. Maybe I'm running in the wrong circles and there isn't much to talk about beyond feeding, diapering, and sleeping until your kid is a certain age. Maybe the infant stage is really a long stretch of running in survival mode and it's hard to think beyond the endless cycle of feeding, diapering, sleeping. But once you break out of that endless cycle, I think you realize a lot of the judgment isn't even there, and that the times it is, you can shrug it off easier because there's more important stuff to deal with.

I think you're generally a pretty sweet, level headed poster. So this is a bit shocking to see you post that but it is a UO thread. However, geographically this might be popular in certain conservative areas. That doesn't make it okay. People speak a lot of different languages here. A lot. Visit New York City and you'll get a taste. They are all 100% American. And illegals- we were all illegals once.

Thank you. I think someone's been watching a little too much Fox News.
