I've started research into buying disposable diapers and I'm feeling overwhelmed...
STMs who use 'sposies -- where do you find good deals? It seems like Amazon, Target and Costco have some good prices, but which is best?
Also, how many in a size and what about trying out different types? Should I just spend more on smaller packages to figure out what works for LO first, then buy economy boxes?
NB & size 1 will be used depending on the size of your LO. NB is typically the shortest phase if you get to use it at all. 2s & 3s are where you kid most likely will be longest.
As for preference you will find you will prefer some brands and fits over others but you will have to have trial and error to find what you like.

So is it worth it to buy smaller packages (and pay more per diaper) so that I'm not left with tons of diapers that don't fit right, leak, etc., until I find what works? Or just bite the bullet and buy the big boxes that are less $ per unit?

I'm no expert, but I can tell you what we did/do.
The hospital put Huggies on Haden so we started buying Huggies. Didn't love them, especially once he sized up. Tried a small pack of Swaddlers, loved them. Used those for awhile. Tried a small pack of Target brand, hated them (still have some lying around). Back to Swaddlers.
I used to always buy at Target when they had GC deals because the prices were good and the GC was awesome (obviously). Now I have the diapers on Amazon Subscribe & Save because good price and convenient.
I added NB Swaddlers to our S&S the other day. Hopefully they work for Hunter as well as they have been for Haden.
It really is trial and error. You'll like some better than others and some will fit better than others.
I bought small packs at first, now I buy the big boxes. Once he starts getting close to sizing up, I buy smaller packs so I don't wind up with tons of left over of a size we can't use. Hunter already has a whole pack of size 2 or 3 waiting because I over-bought when Haden had to move to a 4.

You just kind of have to find out which diapers work on your LO first. I'm glad that Target brand worked out great for DS because they are sooooo much cheaper than everything else. Although I haven't tried many generic diapers. I heard Sam's Club is alright. We tried Publix brand and they sucked donkey balls.

The link I've shared & lots of moms I've talked to say she smaller packs - with coupons- are usually a better deal than big boxes!

In the beginning we bought several small packs to find what we liked/what work for our DS. We ended up preferring pampers swaddlers sensitive until he got into size 4, then after some trial and error we went with huggies little movers. He is now using pull-ups and huggies overnights.
Once we found what worked each time we changed we bought the large boxes at target with the gift card deals, rotating baby sales and coupons or at diapers.com with coupons, sales and 5% back when set up as a recurring purchase (can be canceled or changed at any time).

I agree with pps it's all personal preference/baby preference. Different diapers will fit each baby different. I like huggies and pampers equally. I didn't like luvs personally. This time I have a bunch from gifts that are huggies and some are just no name brands. I personally wouldn't buy huge boxes of one brand until you know what you like the best. I'm sure there will be more than one brand that you'll like using.

Yes to smaller packages at first. Which again, depending on your LO you may only need a handful of any beginning size so it saves you there as well.

No experience yet, but we have a small box of Pampers (NB) and a small box of Huggies (NB) ready to go. Figured we'll just have to try stuff out to see what works. We also have Amazon Prime, so once we figure out what fits baby we'll mass order from there to save some money.

I only used Pampers with DD but I didn't ever try anything else. I used them mostly for outing because I did cloth 98% of the time for the first year. Then she was Pampers only. I always waited for Target to offer the gift card with purchase and used coupons.

The link mango posted is my diaper buying bible. It got me through all my diapering needs for DS1 and I have started stocking up based on it again for this little fella. With my first, I bought 1 small pack of NB size and that was enough. As soon as they start leaking through a diaper (assuming it is not the result of male babies "shooting upwards" because of not tucking their little boy part down when placing diaper), they are ready for the next size up. My son was ready for the next size up within a week basically. I got one pack of NB for this baby as well. As I recall, hospital used NB size and I think I also took the unfinished pack of those home. We use Pampers exclusively.
Using that link with the diaper pricing and coupons/sales, I always do best buying small packages of diapers in terms of per diaper pricing. I have never paid full price for diapers, in fact never paid more than 50% of retail price for diapers. When I am in a pinch and have not seen great diaper deals in a while, I am an amazon prime/amazon mom member and will do the big case at 20% discount. That deal is not bad, just not as good as small packs with coupons and sales. CVS has been the biggest provider of my diaper stash with their sale prices combined with extra care bucks rewards on purchases plus coupon use.

Last time around the hospital used Pampers Swaddlers and that happened to be what we had at home. We only used one box of newborn before moving to size 1's for a while. I like to buy them at Target when they have a gift card offer and try to stock up when it's a $15 GC.

Coupons. Coupons. Coupons. Sign up for all your baby clubs. Huggies. Pickupthevalues.com. Coupons.com etc.
I wasn't planning to stock up because of possible allergies. But I buy all my diapers at publix because they are so coupon friendly. Last week I got 18 bags for $40 and some change. That was a mix for DD1 and now 2. I figured it was such a good deal, if I can't use them I'll donate.
DD1 was never in newborn size. And she is in 4s now. Those and 2s were her longest running sizes. We were barely in 3s.
Also if you choose store brands. I think target has the best. .

Thanks everyone! CVS and other drug stores weren't even on my radar, but now I'll check them out. MIL got us a big box of... something... in a size 1, but I'll pick up a small pack of NBs to have when baby comes home. Then I'll play it by ear and make sure I never buy without coupons.

I've heard good things about drugstores also.
In the beginning we experimented a little til we discovered what we liked-pampers swaddlers in the beginning.
I used to buy at bru and target when they would have deals. Bru would have 10 dollars off a case up to 2 or 3 so i would buy that many at a time. Then target would do a gift card deal.
A few months ago i started noticing the coupon for bru became 8 dollars off and target giftcard 5 dolars instead of 10. So i bit the bullet and signed up for amazon mom.
We will be getting our second case next week. I will sign up for ds once he arrives- for right now I'm going to buy a case of newborn or ones everytime dh gets paid til he arrives.
It is a bit of trial an error to find what works for your baby. We also loved the pampers swaddlers and used those almost exclusively after we ran through all the random brands we got as gifts. We get ours off of amazon. I love that they just show up at your front door.

We did this last time and it worked out really well. DS started out in Pampers Swaddlers for newborn and then size 1. During size 1, we switched to Huggies Pure and Natural because he's super sensitive. After that, I ordered them through Amazon subscribe and save with Prime. Getting the best deal really depends on the brand you settle on. This time, I've got small packs of Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive and Huggies Pure and Natural in newborn size ready to go. When it comes to diapers, your baby's shape really matters to avoid leaks. I know a lot of people like to stock up on diapers, but I'm too worried about getting stuck with ones I can't use if a store won't take them back.

When my DD was itty bitty, I LOVED Pampers swaddlers. Luvs sucked so bad for her. As she got older, I've tried the Walmart, Target, and Kroger generic brands. Target is my fave, Kroger works well too, but runs smaller.

That was my worry...getting stuck with a bunch. And it's not like they're cheap! Seems like a lot of ladies here like the Swaddlers so definitely going to keep that in mind.

I have no experience yet but so far we have gotten a small pack of NB swaddlers and a big box of size 1s because they were given to us. We got a sample of the swaddlers and liked them but the reality of the situation is that store brand is SOOO much cheaper OH MY GAHH! lol Walmart brand is 10$ less for a bigger box. Now I have researched generic diapers and it really depends on the baby. By far Target brand got the best reviews over Walmart but once we go through the swaddlers that we have on hand were going to try out the generic with a small pack. We figured if they work for our LO and doesn't cause problems then why not? Im all for saving money
eta: I just wanted to add that as PPs have said, if you clip coupons then buying the smaller packs with coupons is actually a better deal especially at drug stores like CVS and Walgreens where you can use their reward bucks with the coupons as well.
As a FTM, ive been stalking the diaper isle every store I go into for buy one get one deals or as close as I can get to a bogo. At CVS if the deal is good enough, ill buy they diapers to get extra bucks, then spend the extra bucks on more diapers in a seperate transaction. At target i usually find wipes for buy one get one. Even though ive worked with 2 year olds for 6 years, I have no preference im diapers. The bad reviews I see on diapers are about how they leaked *overnight*. So I think itll be a lot of trial and error!

I agree, Swaddlers sound good so far. They also got the best rating on Baby Gear Lab for what I consider readily-available, reasonably priced disposables.

I will say over and over how much I love Swaddlers. I love how they fit and they don't smell like pee! I felt like as soon as Haden peed in a Target diaper I smelled pee. And Huggies were blowout-prone for us.
We also use Pampers Baby Dry Extra Protection over night.
I HEART PAMPERS.
But we use Huggies wipes because Pampers wipes sucked.
I digress.
Oh, also, when we had extra diapers in an outgrown size, we just gave them to a friend with a smaller baby or to day care.

We use Pampers Sensitive wipes, never liked the texture of the Huggies wipes they always seemed to tear. Guess wipes are just a matter of preference too.
That is a good idea about giving away the unused diapers when they outgrow them.

Haha, ya I use Pampers Sensitive too. I hated Huggies wipes. They have more texture which is good for cleaning but they tear and gave my son rashes.
