Best responses for not drinking with friends?

Hey girls!

So this is my first pregnancy, so DH and I really aren't telling anyone until we hit that 12 week mark. However, we are already fielding suspicious glances and some "wink wink, nudge nudges" from friends when we've gone out to dinner and they notice I'm enjoying a club soda rather than my typical glass of wine. Does anyone have any cute/funny/clever responses while you're trying to keep things quiet?

Lately I have been blaming it on DS who didnt sleep well for awhile. I would say I was exhausted and didnt want to get an instant headache.

My preferred tactic is just to not draw attention to it and say nothing, but if you feel like they're already on to you...


"Trying not to indulge too much (or to save money) before the holidays," and if your in laws are like mine, you can add, "because I'm going to need to drink cases of wine to survive my MIL."

Unfortunately, my MIL is my favorite drinking buddy! haha She and I will go through a bottle of wine in a night easyyyyy! And she's actually coming to visit next week to see our new nephew!   So for them I'll probably go with some sort of headache or not feeling well lol

I'm no help as I don't drink too often so it wouldn't really be odd to have a pop or juice instead. When directly offered I said no because I was already sick (I was). I second the DD excuse.

I had a girls night on Saturday and I told them I was detoxing from my trip to Vegas. They all rolled their eyes and I'm pretty sure they suspect something. I guess the key is to not confirm or deny.

So far we have forgotten to have booze in the house and offered to make a run out to get some, "shared" a cider, which I took one sip of. Had cider & bourbon that my husband made (sans bourbon for me), forgotten my purse so I didn't have my license... I don't think it really matters if people suspect though. Most people are polite enough not to outright ask, and would eventually figure they had been wrong if no announcement comes.

I have happy hour planned with my old coworkers later this month and there's isn't an excuse in the book they wouldn't think is weird comig from me. We have monthly happy hours and I always indulge. My plan right now is to get there early and get a virgin drink straight from the bar and then not get a second bc I'm driving.

The bolded has been my gold standard. Go directly to the bar and order a Coke or whatever and say there's rum in it if someone asks.

You're detoxing.

You're saving your calories for holiday parties or whatever.

If you are at a party, just carry around an open beer bottle or 1/4 full glad of wine.

If you get a virgin drink, ask the bartender to put it in a glass they use for alcohol. Often they use different glasses for non alcoholic drinks.

My favorite: cranberry with club soda and a twist of lime. It looks like a fun drink and you can just list vodka in the ingredients of anyone asks.

So many great ideas, thanks for sharing! We might be having our work Christmas party next week and I'm not ready to share with one of my co-workers. I would be fine with my boss and other co-worker, just not her.

That was totally my plan of attack when we went out for dinner last Friday! But then the waiter totally blew my cover. He came around and asked if I wanted another club soda with lime   haha Apparently my husband got several questions after I left but it was determined we were just "prepping the field" hahaha. Obviously, if we get asked directly its not the end of the world. Loving all these ideas though!!

I have a baby shower Saturday & I know there will be champagne. I plan to walk around with a glass while I'm socializing & pour it out in the bathroom. I'll probably even take the tiniest of sips here & there.

Last time I was pregnant I'd sent H to the bar for my "rum & diet cokes."

On medicine that doesn't allow alcohol...

Sprite with lime say it's vodka and soda...

Fill a beer with water... I used this trick saturday.. worked like a charm

I've used several of the above...course I still get side eyed by girlfriends and usually tell a few of my best ones early anyway. I have a dinner out this weekend with a big group that I'm not sure they will be quiet about it, but guess will just see.

Medicine excuse works well.

I'll also use the DD excuse if DH and I are together. Say that DH and I are really cracking down on not drinking anything if we're driving, so Im letting him drink tonight.
