Hi all! I delivered my sweet baby boy at 34 weeks last Thursday. I was induced after my water broke at 33w2d. I was diagnosed with IUGR and intermittent absent flow around 30 weeks. Baby boy was estimated to be 3 pounds 10 ounces the week he was born but weighed 4 pounds 7 ounces. The doctors now say he might have had slight IUGR. The cord was really thick so my OB said she wonders if it was hard to get a good reading of the blood flow on ultrasounds. Who knows! My little guy is 6 days old and in the NICU. He lost a good bit of weight and is finally starting to gain! He needs to build his endurance with eating and has been getting whatever he doesn't take in a feeding tube. NICU life has been overwhelming but I think I'm starting to get the hang of it!
Weclome and congratulations! I hope that you have short NICU stay. I love your attitude! Getting him to figure out how to eat will probably be your biggest challenge. He will get it!
Welcome. Our DD was born at 32 wks. Her NICU stay was 3 wks. She is 9 wks old and over 7 pounds already! I encourage you to reach out and ask as many questions as you need.

Sorry you have to join us, but welcome! And yay for moving to feeder/grower! My NICU always said that learning how to eat is the hardest thing they have to do, but once they get it, they are golden. Fx for a short stay in the NICU!
Congrats on your LO and I'm sorry you're living the NICU life. Hopefully you won't be there too long. Once my boys took to a bottle, they went home pretty quickly.
He's doing great and is gaining weight but still in the NICU because he has to eat all of his bottles in full by mouth for 24 hours. He's been doing 3-4 per day out of 8 and is close to finishing the others but not quite so the rest goes in the tube. It's so frustrating because he is so close but I still think it will be a while before he can take all 8 bottles in full by mouth. Thanks for checking on him

Ask about changing him to an ad lib schedule...that means that he has to take a certain number of mLs per day rather than at each feeding. If he finishes one bottle and is still hungry, he can have more at the same feeding which makes up for him not being so hungry at another time. It may not make a difference quite yet, but it will soon!

That's a great idea! Thank you!
This is a great idea.
Also one day they just get it. He could go from drinking only 3-4 one day to all the next. Learning to eat is the hardest. Hugs to you.

They switched my daughter to ad lib at some point and then one day, she was only eating about half her feeds and getting the rest via tube, and we came in the next day and the nurse told us she had eaten everything since midnight. It really is a switch flipping.
