First, I apologize for disappearing the past 5 days but … newborn. Also, my hands are still pretty numb so typing on my phone really isn’t doable and this is my first chance on the laptop. As we’re getting more acclimated I hope to be on a bit more to stay on top of things.
Second, congrats to all the mommas with outside babies … seems things have been moving along the past week!
TL;DR: I am amazed with everyone who is able to do med-free labors, It took us until Sunday to finalize Baby Bee’s name (Sadie), who was born at 1:11pm, weighing 7lbs 12oz and 20" long.
As I stated in the Countdown post, I was still just 1cm, received a vaginal dose of meds around 9:45p to get the party started and was scheduled to receive oral doses every 4hrs following as needed. Around 11-something I sent hubs home to get some rest as I was going to take some Ambien and get some rest myself. Good thing I sent hubs home b/c hospitals and the machines beeping make him nervous. The Ambien did nothing for me and baby was showing some signs of distress so we tried flipping sides a few times, then added in fluids and then the oxygen mask. B/c of the distress, it was already decided I would skip the first oral dose that was supposed to be given around 2a. I was nauseous throughout this so the nurse suggested the nausea meds. She knew my concern with mixing meds and how I didn’t want to wake up in active labor w/o time for an epidural and assured me it would be OK. Plus it should help me sleep, especially with the Ambien in my system. Well, that was a fail. I started having some painful contractions but nothing too consistent. On top of all that, I never really had a good BM Thursday so I was a little constipated (meds obviously not helping) and was trying to go to the bathroom while dealing with the contractions. The nurse then suggested a pain med since nothing else seemed to be working, which I finally agreed to after again stressing my concerns about potentially missing the epi window. I’m not quite sure what happened but at one point, while I was on the toilet, the nurse said she really needed to check my progress. We made it back to the bed but before I could get on, I thought I was going to poop myself and “ran” back to the bathroom. When nothing happened, she basically forced me to the bed, checked my cervix and I was 6cm. She said, “You won’t be able to have a BM b/c that’s a baby you’re feeling!” I am not quite sure how long this all took b/c the meds affected me, just not how they were supposed to.
The next thing I recall is it’s 5:45a, the nurse is telling me to call my hubs while she’s paging the anesthesiologist for my epi. I’m pretty sure my epi was being administered just 30min later but I snapped at the guy when he started asking me questions. I basically told him that I answered these questions at check-in and he should reference the paper in his hand. (oops, pain makes me mean). Good thing is my water broke on it’s own while they were administering the epi. Once it took effect, my body was relaxed enough that the other meds I had taken earlier were all working as they should too. Nice cocktail before the finale! Hubs arrived at the hospital about 6-something and just hung out in the room while I was in-and-out of my haze.
I think I started pushing around 11a and Baby Girl was born at 1:11pm, weighing 7lbs 12oz and 20" long. Between my 3rd degree tear and the long time it took to deliver the placenta, I lost a lot of blood and my hemoglobin was down 50%. Not quite enough to warrant getting blood but I’ll be on iron for a few months. Since I started a fever during labor, Baby Girl had to be on antibiotics for 48hrs which gave us an extra night in the hospital and an extra day to finalize her name =)
