Talk to me about pulling up to standing

Ok I feel like kind of an idiot because I'm not quite sure how to encourage DD to pull up to standing (or go from laying to sitting/sitting to laying). Yesterday she tried pulling herself up on her activity cube while I was holding the other side down but then she got stuck standing and was veeeery wobbly. I know some people have mentioned letting them fall so they can learn how to stand/sit/crawl/etc better but if I didn't sort of support her she would've hit her face on the activity cube or fallen on the pretty hard floor. I don't want to be "helicoptery" but I feel like I'm doing something wrong or missing something.

i just spot ds and make sure he doesn't fall, but don't interfere with whatever he's exploring.. there is nothing wrong with that. eventually their muscles will get stronger and they won't fall as much and won't need you to spot them.

Just spot her. Show her how to gently plop onto her bum if she gets into a pickle.

She figured it out after a few falls . I can't save her from all of them. I'm lucky she has a helmet!

So it's hard to spot her if she's pulling up on something you have to hold down. If there's something stable she can practice on (the seat of the couch, ottoman, coffee table) and then you can be behind her to catch her if she's falling onto her face. Some of the places we practiced were over a really soft area rug, too. It made me feel better about letting her practice safe falling. And honestly, she got good at safely getting herself down again pretty quickly (within a week, I think, if not sooner).

Thanks ladies. I know this sounded like a silly question but I feel like DD is not one to really try things out or explore on her own (like her mama) so I have to kinda show her that she can do these things before she will try.

This. And I don't even know how DD figured out how to pull herself up, she just kinda did it on her own.

I kind of assumed DS would just figure this out eventually. We practiced sitting with him and he eventually got it and I sometimes help him to push himself up to sitting from laying down so I guess we are practicing that. He stands up supported but am I supposed to be showing him that he can pull up to that or will it just eventually happen??

I'm having a similar problem with DD. She's more into sitting and examining things than climbing, pulling up, or crawling. She'll stand and hold on to stuff if I put her there, but when she gets tired of standing she doesn't know how to get down. I'm trying to encourage her to fall on her butt, but she locks her knees and just falls straight back like a board. We have hardwood floors, so I have been "helicopter-ing", which is probably not helping. Maybe I need to let her practice on our bed for a few days.

When I sit cross-legged on the floor, he really likes pulling himself up and standing while holding onto me. If he falls towards me, I'm not pointy. If he falls away from me, we have carpet. (Usually he just sits abruptly instead of tipping over in any direction.)

This. Though I need to lift up my knees for her to be successful most of the time, or get her to be beside me and pull up on my arm but she usually scooches around and goes for my lap.
