I'm giving my dog away to a friend, and I'm sad

DW and I have had our dog since he was 8 weeks old. He is now 11 years old and will turn 12 later this year. He's been with us everywhere and through everything, but unfortunately due to the circumstances we have to make the difficult decision to let him go.
When DW was pregnant with DS our dog could sense it and the further she got along he was protective of her. When DS was born he was curious, but displayed some concerning behaviors and mannerisms. We thought it would go away as he got more familiar and used to DS being around. Unfortunately things just got worse. As DS got older and curious about the dog he wanted to get up close and personal. We were cautious about it and tried to take things gradual, but our dog never seemed comfortable. He has snapped at DS on several occasions and bit him once; though not hard, it seemed to serve as a warning.
To me it seems like our dog was and is jealous of the attention DS is getting. He didn't act this way with our friends DD even when she was at his age. To make matters worse since we have to keep dog and DS separated Dog has been confined to small areas and doesn't have the freedom he used to.
While I am confident DW and I are making the right decision here for our son, I feel terrible for our dog. Our friend who is taking him has spend time around him and her older daughter loves him. Though 11 + years is a long time and it will be tough to part ways.
