I grew up with it being pop or soda. But someone told me there are some places where it's all just called coke. That's weird to me.
In the uk all fizzy drinks generally come under the umbrella name of pop, but we call them by their individual names, suck as coke or lemonade etc. do you just call coke soda? Because if you call all fizzy drinks soda, how do you know which soda someone means if that's what they ask for?
If you're ordering at a restaurant you just order what you want - "sprite please". The waiter may ask you "would you like a soda" or "would you like pop" etc. Also at a convenience store or gas station here the wall says "Pop" but in other states it would say "Soda".

The menu usually has the brand (Coca cola vs Pepsi) so you know what to ask. If not, I'll either say Can I have a coke? Or can I have a Pepsi? .... It's always a random guess. I think I guess coke more. If they serve the other brand, they'll just say, Is Pepsi ok?
I grew up in the south and everyone calls soda coke. For ex: I used to send my H (who is from Alaska) to the store for a coke but I wanted a dr pepper not an actual coke. The first time he actually brought home a coke and he didn't understand why I was so aggravated at him. Now I specifically ask for a dr pepper instead of a coke but he also knows when I say coke I mean dr pepper.
I always say soda, most everyone around here does. My BFF calls it "soda-pop". I only drink sprite or ginger ale, and if they don't have sprite then it's 7up or Sierra mist, either way it's lemon lime. Awwww I just had a flashback of my grandmother. She's dutch and has the cutest accent and always called it "lemon-lime"...I can hear her saying "would you like some lemon-lime?" Man, she's the cutest!
I still say pop and I moved down south over 10 years ago. Everyone looks at me like I'm nuts and says things like "you mean soda?" but idgaf. Haha. And don't get me started on the pronunciation of the words pecan and crayon.
Omg, pecan. I worked at a call center for a few months between jobs and I had a guy call and I needed to make sure his address was still accurate. He was from somewhere down south, and lived on Pecan St. I said "pe-con" because that's how we say it here and the guy had a fit!!! In his deep accent "It's pe-can!!!!! I don't know why y'all keep calling it pe-con when it's pe-can!!!" I almost started laughing out loud...I don't think I'll ever forget that guy haha
I was recently at a wedding in Texas (just south of Dallas) and the bride and groom gave out was candied pecans as part of their wedding favor. Boy was I corrected when I didn't pronounce it "Pee-Con".
