I have the ability to switch positions at work. It would be the same job title, same pay, same supervisor, just a new department. Switching would most likely cut down on the stress I've been having and limit interaction with a difficult nurse that has been making my job difficult. However if I take said position, I will be stuck in that job for a year and not able to apply for anything else should something better come up.
I guess I'm just asking for advice. Would you take less stress but no chance of moving ahead for a year, or just deal with the stress until a better paying position comes along (which there is no way of knowing when/if one will).

Is there a good chance of better positions coming up? Does it happen frequently where you are? If not I would consider making the switch. I know a year feels like a long time but really isn't in the scheme of things. It would be nice to cut down on everyday stress
I guess you've already gone the route of trying to not be scheduled at the same time as the problem nurse?
Are you in a place where a higher paying position is a somewhat urgent priority? Are those type of positions few and far between? Do you lose any type of seniority in the switch?
No way to work different shifts of Thai nurse. Positions opening are a gamble, and if I miss an opportunity in the next year there will be something else at some point. And no I don't lose seniority with the switch.

GL, its so hard making work decisions!
It's a gamble. There could be nothing that opens or something will. That's why I'm conflicted. I submitted my resume for the new position so I'm just waiting to see what happens.

I think if it's an opportunity to reduce stress and has no ill effect on your status or seniority, you should do it. Like jt2378 said, It might seem like a long time, but a year can go by really quickly.
That's true. And I know realistically I can do anything for a year, even if I end up not liking the new position.

Interesting timing on this post. Today is my 1 year anniversary in my current position. The year has flown by.
I also am doing work similar to what I was doing before, but in a different department. Some of the same coworkers, some different.
This position is about 88% less stressful than my old job and I am 92% happier than I was. I was not limited in looking for other positions in the meantime, but if I had been, I would not have given a single fuck. All I cared about was getting out of my former role.
If the move is lateral, low-risk, and you don't lose seniority, benefits or salary, but your stress level goes way down? I'm all for it.
If I were in your shoes, I'd take the greener grass right now, as opposed to holding out for the greenest grass...which may or may not exist.

I should also add, I spoke with my supervisor over my concerns and she said that if a new position that is a growth opportunity arises, she wouldn't hold me back (she can "release" me from my position if I want to take on something else). So hearing that from her made me feel better.
I just have to wait for the interview now and see if they decide to move me over to this new position. Thanks for the advice ladies.
