So I have a cold. Started on Mon evening with a cough. Felt the worst on Tuesday and am starting to feel better however my cough is awful. I am coughing so much it's making me vomit at least once a day. It also kept me up most of last night, robitussin didn't do much, cough drops only helped when I was sucking on them, I elevated my head and that made the most difference but I still saw every single hour last night.
The thing is we are leaving tomorrow on an out of state long weekend road trip. I don't know if I should call my ob and see if there is anything prescription I can get that would be better? Or should I just suck it up and seek out a minute clinic if for some reason it does get worse?
I'm gonna answer based on all I know, which is my experience/what I would do. I have asthma and I know all too well how a "little cough" can turn into a respiratory infection, bronchitis, etc very quickly. So I use an inhaler and I was instructed to switch to my stronger dose at the first sign of a cold; doing this usually kicks the cold/cough in 24-48hrs before anything worse develops.
So my WWN16D response is to call the doc before you leave. There might be something you can start taking now before it gets worse (which hopefully it doesn't). Also drink a TON TON TON of hot water (like for tea, but no tea bag) with honey. And when you cough, I usually bend over just slightly to assist anything that is breaking loose to come up/out.
Oh one more thing which you might've already tried. When you go to bed tonight, try sleeping in an upright position (as best as possible) so it drains down instead of settling in your chest.
kleigh I definitely elevated my head/ chest whichever helped and I am drinking a lot of ginger tea with honey and lemon (why not help with the nausea too!)
I just feel like there isn't much they can do for me, but I guess I won't know until I call. And even though I am a medical professional myself I hate calling.
Staaaahp! You're a medical professional and you let me tell you what I do?! Lol. I'm in insurance lol. Well I still say you make that call, who wants to deal with the minute clinic while you're away from home.

To be fair I am not in human medicine but I still understand a lot about human medicine. Pregnancy meds I know no more than you and what I can find on the Internet.
I called. I called... It only took me half a day to work up the gumption to do it . Of course it's a message on the nurses line so now to wait on a call back.
annnd there is nothing they will do for me. As much as I knew that was a likely answer it makes me kind of want to cry damn hormones. I just want to be able to sleep.

did they give you any helpful suggestions to ease your misery?

Is plain (not DM) mucinex on the ok OTC med list you have? It won't stop the cough right away, but it'll break everything up and make it more productive...in turn shorting the cycle. If not tons and tons of liquids to drink and eat. Secretions thin out drastically when you're super hydrated. I wish I had more to offer. Hope you start feeling better soon!

I went through this a couple of weeks ago. In addition to the things you are trying, I took a steamy shower right before bed to try to loosen it up as much as possible. I've heard of suggestions of putting Vick's vapo rub in a wax warmer near your head, though I didn't try that one personally.
And then I took a double dose of Unisom when nothing else really worked, to force my body to sleep.
Nothing I am not already doing. Humidifier (which I won't have this weekend), tea honey and lemon, list of otcs which so far isn't helping...
she did suggest I try and get some rest... I think that is what made me want to cry lol.
Feel better aggiebug. Will you be able to rest/sleep in the car?
Yes I should be able to. H would normally drive most of the way anyway. I have Tylenol cold in me and half a unisom (because I am the lightest of light weights) so hopefully that does it for me tonight. I seriously think I will be a whole new person if I could just sleep.
Thanks for the sympathy and suggestions. Last pregnancy I never got sick and omg am I jealous of my former pregnant self.

I was told this wasn't safe until after 1st tri?
Good to know! I've never taken it but it was on the handout I had. Yet another reason for 2T to hurry up and get here.
