I know there's a fear of regression here, but I would definitely try a pull up for the road trip. DS1 has been potty trained for almost 6 months and he still uses a pull up for long trips, in case he falls asleep. A wet carseat when you're out of town and can't adequately wash/dry it is the worst. I only made that mistake twice.

We've convinced him that pull ups are for emergencies only. Not sure if he really understands, but it's VERY rarely wet.
