I'm 29 weeks pregnant with a boy. The front runner first name for DH and me is Ira. Middle name would most likely be Jos.eph (family name). The few people we've told IRL have had a somewhat negative response either because "it's different", "nms", "never heard it" etc.
DD is Elo.die. This sounds like a fine sibset to me.

Because to me one is so closely tied to a particular culture (Ira is a Hebrew name).
I wouldn't blink at a Ruth and an Ira.
Not saying you can't use names that are from different cultures, but I'd probably give a quick pause if I heard those two names together.
Thank you for explaining your thoughts. DH and I don't really have any strong ties to our cultures. We have been open to names from any culture really. I have yet to encounter any one IRL that has heard of the name Elo.die. I've even had multiple people ask if we made it up. I'm just wondering if the average person will pick up on the cultural difference in the names.

emilillies- I think if you live in an area that has a decent Jewish population (I do) that most will get the cultural connection. If I met a young Ira, I'd probably assume there was some Jewish heritage somewhere in the family tree. I am not Jewish but I LOVE so many Hebrew names, especially for girls. I almost feel though that I'd be almost appropriating, if I were to use a name like Yael or Chava.
I know we have discussed using cultural names (from one different than our own). I don't feel tied to my heritage either, so I totally understand wanting to look outside of those names to find one more appealing.
I like ira. I also know a female Ira - her parents said it was a girl's name in other cultures although I haven't looked into this - so not everyone might think there's a strong Jewish association

As much as I want to like it, when I see it I think I-R-A as in individual retirement account. However I liked reading the history about it on BTN.
This, it's a retirement account to me. Or Ira Glass from NPR/Serial podcasts. I want to like it, but think there are better names out there. It's not awful, it's a real name and if you love it, you should use it, it doesn't matter what others think. I love Elodie.
We are using Ari for this LO and most people don't love it, but we do and that's what matters (well, and it's a legit boy name).
I like Ira just fine and think it flows well with Elodie. There is a strong Jewish connection for me because I come from a Jewish family. Even more, I think of Ira Gershwin when I hear the name. He was a lyricist who collaborated with his younger brother George to make some amazing music in the early 20th century.

Love Ira. When my first was in preschool an Ira started there and I got so excited to see a little baby Ira. Turned out to be an Indian girl, pronounced Ear-uh so I never got to see a little baby Ira.

I like Ira but I do think it is a little odd with Elodie. That being said, I don't think having a matched sibset is as important as having individual names that you love!

I agree too. My kids' names don't particularly make a great sib set, especially DS1's name, but if I had tried to match my younger kids' names to his, I wouldn't have given them the names I really loved. Loving and using a great name is more important.
