While we are most definitely are a secular family, we are in a secular environment as well, which means I generally have nothing to whine/vent about. I love that the board is here and would be happy to support secular families who are dealing with less friendly settings. I'd be willing to participate in a weekly or biweekly check-in. +1 on being tagged in to remember
Wyatt isn't due until July. Already we have been bugged about getting him baptized. We aren't. My mom knows we aren't religious but his family does not.
We don't have any friends who are atheists. So it would be nice to have a place to go.
Everything I start to write becomes a novel. But yes, a weekly check-in would be good. Like, this morning at the employee recognition ceremony I went to: it started with an invocation that was clearly Christian- it even ended with "anen." I work at a public university.

I would participate! I always forget to check here but seems like it's been slow. We live in a different state than our parents so we don't have much anecdotes until we go visit. haven't had any issues in our town either. I guess we're lucky! Lol But I'll play!
I would try my best! Although this is the first time I've been on TCF in at least 2 weeks. BTW at a regional luncheon of several companies yesterday they prayed AND said the pledge of allegiance. It aggravates me so much that they assume everyone is Christian... That plus the pledge reminded me of N. Korea.

I'm just coming into my secular (humanist Jewish) life with my SO who was also raised in our United States of Christian Hegemony. They know a lot more about secularism than I do because they are so well read and thoughtful, but it turns out their family hid that they were Jewish three generations back to leave Europe we are trying to figure out what of and how to present our culture to our LO. While I'm sure I'm some kind of physicalist I also love theology and went to a Jewish day-school for pre-K thru 5 and became Bar Mitzvah. As the Jew in my class I had an exclusive relationship with my instructors in high-school and college when we read Milton's Paradise lost and I got tokened into representing the entire history of Jews and the Old Testament because that was my job? Trouble is I _am_ super into why Judaism exists and how to embrace its culture and my heritage without subscribing to neocolonialist Israel-worship that's become a staple of the diaspora.
So yeah thanks for keeping the board around as we try to navigate all this with a new baby in a new town in which we're for sure not the majority. Hopefully I can be coached into joining a cultural Jewish group in my community IRL after I get a few questions out of my system on the board
Hi All! So glad to see so many people interested in this board now! Silver lining to it almost (hopefully) getting chopped?!
I love the idea of a weekly/bi weekly check in. I am more than happy to post and tag and then add a related question/topic of discussion for each check in. What does everyone think? I also have a hard time finding the time to post as often as I would like, so if someone else is interested in leading a check in that's fine too!
My parents didn't start going to church until I was in middle school, but once they started they became very religious and my sister is the same way. DH also grew up in a very religious family. Family visits can be stressful especially around holidays. At leastmine has gotten a little better about respecting us, but DH's family....has not.
Hey hey! I have never posted here, either, but I'd love to have somewhere to get my thoughts out. My husband and I both come from very religious backgrounds and I've gone through the motions of having my kids baptized (My mom's cousin is a priest so it was a big deal to everyone...) but other than that, we don't really go to church. I'm like a closeted atheist. It's not so hard to fake it but sometimes I get frustrated that I feel the need to.
I would bet there are many people in your same situation. It's such a strange thing, that blind belief in religion is accepted as normal but informed disbelief can cast you out. (Not saying you personally blindly believe(d), but just talking about following religions in general.) Unfortunately, it's pretty standard to stick with the religion you get passed down to you from your parents.
My house was split - my dad (and his 2nd wife) are religious, as are my sister and my BIL. My mom is atheist, as are my brother and SIL. TBH I'm pretty thankful for that situation because anytime my dad tried to drag us to church, my mom told him to ask us if we wanted to go instead of telling us we had to.
DH was raised 100% without religion, but that's more a product of his culture than intentional secularism.
Anyway - long story short - you can share your frustrations here!
I love the way you put this! It's scary how many people blindly follow religion without really knowing much about what they are following.

OMG, yes! This sounds totally dumb- but I didn't realize Jesus was Jewish until I was an adult. I'm actually generally pretty bright, it's just that the whole Jewish part wasn't really discussed in a meaningful way in my church. I feel like overall the sermons weren't really connected to the bible at all. Many times, as I got older, I would read the bible in church, since I thought the sermons were so out of touch. I'm pretty sure my dad would say he was a Christian, completely missing the fact that the Christian religion only started after Jesus' death and all that.
aves0708, thanks for volunteering (again) to run the check-in! I think you're right, tagging people will be best, so hopefully that'll help keep the momentum going. Sounds like we're coming from a variety of backgrounds, which is great! Let's try a weekly check-in and see how that goes.
