My newborn dd is now 4 days old. I just posted in the check in with my questions about nursing.
I was just wondering what the thoughts are on caffeine? The resources I'm finding vary. I don't want to drink more than a cup of coffee a day, but just wondering what some thoughts are on it at this newborn stage!
I avoided all caffeine with ds just because it was overwhelming
I drank 1 cup (about 10oz) daily while pregnant and went back to drinking about 2-3 cups after DD's birth. She was never affected by the caffeine and from what I understand consuming caffeine is OK while breastfeeding as long as it's within reason (ie, I wouldn't consume those energy drinks). I've heard anecdotally that some think not having any caffeine while pregnant can affect baby while breastfeeding as they're not "used to it", but I don't know if this is true. I've also heard some moms say that they had to cut out caffeine during the newborn stage, but that their LOs got used to it as they got a few months older. Personally, I have no idea how you'd be able to tell if caffeine affects LO because those first few months are so hard for figuring out what is bothering your kid so how would you know it's caffeine? They go through so many changes in those first few months. My advice is that you need to stay sane and have some pleasure in those first few months and for me coffee makes me happy and is a nice easy "reward"-- something to look forward to every morning on my maternity leave.
I didn't drink any coffee when I was pregnant. Now I just drink decaf. Like you said, there are varying answers to this topic so I just choose to be more cautious.
I think it's a completely individual thing. I drank coffee while pregnant with both kids and I drink it now while BFing. Neither kid seemed to be affected. I also eat chocolate -and that had caffeine - without issue. Just watch for a reaction but it should be fine.
I didn't have any coffee when pregnant. My husband and I both noticed the baby was fussier and harder to get to sleep when I had caffeine, so I went back to decaf. I'll try again once the baby is three months old.

I had caffeine when I needed it, both while I was pregnant and currently when breastfeeding. I do avoid it later in the day but have never noticed a difference in the way my LO responds. I would rather be awake enough to safely take care of my baby than avoid caffeine at all costs. I do not drink it every day, but if LO had a rough night and I have had no sleep, I will drink up to 2 cups to help me get through the day. It is about finding a balance. Plus, I love the taste of black coffee, but on those days I just opt for decaf!
I drink a cup of coffee (12 oz.) almost every day and continued through pregnancy and now while nursing. I've done my reading and I'm comfortable with that amount. I haven't noticed any ill effects.
I drank 1-2 shots of espresso during pregnancy. Went to mostly decaf for a month or two after and now I'm back to my usual 2shots/day plus 2decaf shots.

I think it may affect some babies, but not all. I drink coffee and soda, more than I should probably, It doesn't seem to affect my girls though. My twins aren't fussier or more excitable, they still STTN, so I still drink it. I did not drink any while pregnant though, I had tea on occasion but nothing stronger than that.
I drank decaf during pregnancy and drink mostly decaf now (I brew my own at home and do a combo so it's actually 40% caff). I haven't noticed any ill effects on the little guy; it definitely doesn't keep him awake since I only drink it in the morning and that is when he actually sleeps the most!
I averaged a cup a day during pregnancy and the same now while BF LO who is 5.5 mo. I occasionally have a second cup but finish all caffiene by early afternoon. So far it doesn't seem to affect LO.
I drank 1 cup of half calf every day while pregnant. I went back to regular when she was born. I never noticed any effects on her and she's now 14 months and continues to be breastfed.

I have always been a coffee drinker and pretty much from the moment of conception through my pregnancy, the smell, sight or thought of coffee made me vomit. So I ended up going caffeine free throughout the pregnancy against my will because coffee was all I really drank with caffeine. But I started drinking coffee again literally in the hospital after giving birth, and I drink 2-3 cups a day and it doesn't bother LO. I had also read that if you don't drink it during pregnancy, the baby might not tolerate it well through breast milk. Thank god that is not the case for us because I missed my coffee so much during pregnancy, even though I was repulsed by it.
Thanks everyone! I'm glad to hear your experiences. I did drink some coffee during pregnancy and just brewed some. Yum I'll stick to one cup or less a day for now.
I had decaf during pregnancy and 1-2 cups of decaf now. It's depends on the baby according to my LC. We had 1 mom in my BF group that drank Mt. Dew most of the day and her LO was fine. We also had a mom that couldn't even eat dark chocolate or LO was up and cranky.
I just followed what my OB said which is not go more than 3 cups during pregnancy. I didn't go more than a cup though to be on the safe side. Now that she's out, I take 2 cups and don't plan to take more than three while at the NB stage
I drank coffee pregnant and nursing and honestly didn't really pay attention to how much. I know it wasn't a crazy amount but some days it would be a few cups throughout the day. When we encountered some sleeping issues I did stop drinking caffeine for about a week and noticed no difference. You have to be pretty desperate for sleep to give up coffee for a week just to see if it could help lol.
I have around 2 cups a day while pumping and haven't noticed any negative effects. I also had about a cup a day while I was pregnant. I just can't imagine giving up coffee right now when I'm running on 3 hours of broken up sleep every day!
i had one cup of iced coffee a day while pregnant and now get a half decaf. sometimes two. i can't drink any caffeine after noon or i have trouble sleeping myself. i've never noticed a difference with her on the days i have more than one cup.
