So I was supposed to be induced on Thursday, but the hospital called me Wednesday night and said they needed to move it to Friday. I was disappointed, but spent an extra day with DS and DH was home. Friday morning, we checked in at 6am. I was put in the labor and delivery room next door to where I delivered my son. They pretty much got us started right away-I got dressed, they hooked me up to the IV. I had the best nurse ever-she was so funny and friendly. The funny thing about my birth story is that my random coincidence, one of my good friends was literally a few doors down delivering her son (born two hours before my DD).
We listened to Pandora and pretty much relaxed most of the day. My doctor came in at about 9am to break my water. It was good to see her and she hung out and talked to me for a bit. I got close with her after the miscarriage, trying to get pregnant again, complications in this pregnancy. So it was really cool that she shared in my joy and was there for me. My contractions started getting pretty painful about 10:30, but I was pretty stubborn and didn't want to ask for an epidural until I really felt like I needed it. At 10:50, the contractions started getting pretty painful and close together, so I requested the epidural, knowing it might take 10-15 minutes before it was in. Well, knowing I dilated from a 4/5 to a 9 in about 30 minutes with my son and that things could likely move faster than that, when I started feeling insane contractions on top of one another without a break and LOTS of pressure, I was freaking out. At that moment, the nurse told me that the anethesiologist got called into an emergent situation (which I later found out was my friend's room!) and was delayed. The nurse kept saying she should probably check me and I was crying and telling her not to. I knew if she checked me and I was at a 9 and found out it was too late to get an epidural, that I would probably pass out from the fear of having to do an unplanned natural childbirth. She kept saying she really needed to check and I kept stalling and saying not to, paralyzed by the fear that I would be complete. I made my husband stand by the door and tell me if he saw him coming, because I was flipping out "Is he coming? Is he coming? Is he coming?" Also, my bladder was so full, which I think made the pain worse, but the nurse didn't want me to get out of bed and let gravity do it's thing, just in case.
Anyways, he finally came in, put the epidural in (which didn't hurt at all this time) and I started to feel relief. The epidural worked great (unlike with my son). Turns out I was only about 5/6cm dilated, phew! I stalled out there for a while, and the nurse ended up having me switch positions and lay on my sides to move her down more, which worked. 30 minutes later, I was at a 10 and ready to push, waiting on the doctor. They ended up giving me an extra dose of the epidural because I started to feel quite a bit and they knew that since my son came out in just a few pushes, it probably wouldn't impact my ability to push. This ended up being awesome because I really wasn't in any pain at all during delivery. My Mom, MIL and DH did something really sweet and held my hands and prayed for me right before everyone came in the room. They prayed for her safety and for the moment that was about to happen that we had been worried about and waiting for for so long. It was very sweet. My doctor came in, my mom, mother in law, and DH were at my head, and the million other nurses/medical professionals who magically show up for a birth. I pushed through 3 contractions (maybe 4), which took about 5-8 minutes, and she was here. The doctor was SHOCKED by her size, a level 2 ultrasound showed that she was 5.5 pounds just a couple of weeks ago-she grew fast! To think that we were worried about her size! They laid her on my chest immediately and DH and I sobbed our eyes out. We got video and pictures of it all. When just her head was out, she had lots of hair, and as we were waiting on the next contraction, my doctor started making pigtails with her long hair, which made everyone laugh.
The next hour, everyone left except DH, and we spent an hour breastfeeding her, holding her, and doing skin to skin before we let family in to watch her have her first bath, etc. I can't believe this all happened 5 days ago, it feels like so much longer ago. This time last week I was still pregnant-what?!
So not a super exciting or eventful birth story, but there you have it!
