Probably post and run as my phone is dying, but... When it's dark, you're exhausted and nursing or holding a baby who won't be put down- how do you stay awake so you don't fall asleep holding them?
It's sooo easy to just close my eyes and fall asleep. The struggle.
I ate and watched tv or surfed the Internet. But I won't lie there were many times I did fall asleep. I always made sure she was nursing in a safe spot like laying on a pillow rather than me just holding her that way she wouldn't fall if I fell asleep. That happened more when she was older though. Eating worked best

iPad for Netflix, reading, on here, Facebook. I have honestly drifted off a few times (which is a little scary) so I make sure she's supported in case. I try not to turn on any lights since I'm trying to teach her night vs day (who knows if that works, but im trying) so it's hard sometimes for sure. I actually have a harder time with it when it's beginning or ending night, (11pm or 4am ish) than middle of the night (1 or 2am)
I will get on my phone and read on here or just surf the Internet. Sometimes I watch some tv (watching the show UnReal on Hulu and it is so dramatic it keeps me up!) Like others have said I have definitely fallen asleep with her on me, so I make sure she is supported just in case.
Good timing on this thread. I've been battling, and managing, to stay awake so far. But last night I a) have no idea when I last fed and changed him and b) woke up with him in my arms and it was daylight. I think we must have slept like that for hours. I feel horrible about it, I'm just glad he's ok. It helps to know I'm not the only one this has happened to! I had the boppy around my waist supporting him, fortunately. I knew I was getting to the point where a person can only go so long on 2-3 hours sleep a night, but if I don't hold him for ages and try to burp him at night, he'll starting spitting up a lot as soon as I put him down. Today DH says he's going to make sure I get some sleep while M is sleeping. This is our first day with no doctor appts and tests for him, so I hope just getting more sleep will help. I'm also going to set up my kindle in here so I can put on movies or something to keep myself alert.
I make my bed safe so that if I fall asleep they are not at risk. I have a bed rail and no pillows or blankets near the baby. I side lie to nurse or have them rest between my breasts.
The risk of nursing in a chair and dropping baby on the floor or onto unsafe pillows when you fall asleep are real.

You're right regal. It's so scary. Last night I downloaded a book on a tablet, some games and grabbed some snacks. None of it kept me up. I am so prayer-fully thankful that we made it through this night okay. The first couple weeks are the hardest. I forgot how hard.
