We're lucky, we usually have no issues with diaper rash however every single time DD is teething her bum gets so red and raw. I'm not so concerned with creams after the fact because we have found a couple that work and we love. My question is there any way to help her before the rash appears/gets bad. I feel like we just wait and treat the problem and maybe that's the only option. Just throwing it out there to you experienced Momma's. TIA!
I used A&D ointment for both my boys and I would try to apply it at every diaper change to prevent the rash. Desitin didn't work for DS1 because he has sensitive skin and ezcema. I liked it so much I continued to use it with DS2.
Also, if ever it got really bad my MIL would make a concoction, flour and water, mix into a paste then I would apply. It would provide relief and help heal the rash.
Baking soda baths have been helping my daughter's sore bum this week. Just a few tablespoons of baking soda in the bath and let them soak for about ten minutes up to three times a day.

Oh sorry I missed the prevention question. I'm not sure there's much you can do other than to make you change diapers often. Maybe some coconut oil on the bum every change?

Thanks ladies, honeylemon and @ajzmommy. We recently switched to a coconut oil based cream for normal diaper changes and that does seem to be helping a little. I hadn't heard of baking soda in the bath though so I'll definitely add that to the routine. I just feel bad waiting and knowing we're primed for a sore bum when she's cutting teeth.
I use desitin to prevent. If I don't, DD will get a rash. I only put it on after a dirty diaper, though, and I use corn starch (as baby powder) after every change just to make sure it's all dry down there.
Straight coconut oil is our go-to on the daily. Can't say it works with absolute perfection, but we've come to learn that it's less about the cream with DS and more about the poop itself. Apparently he just has really acidic poop (or really basic, not sure which, but it's intense either way so you get the point). If he isn't changed with a relative quickness, he gets a red bum. Once it's cleaned up he's good to go, but time is of the essence with him more or less. The coconut oil helps keep a barrier there and we'll likely use the same with DD.
Funny....he never had a diaper rash at all as an infant. First time was the summer of his 1st birthday.

DD goes thru phases like that and I did not think to attribute it to teething! She is going thru an episode right now and is actually cutting a tooth as well, so thanks for this. When this rash happens though I usually just make sure she's in a new diaper every 2.5 hrs, even if there is barely anything in it, it helps to just keep a fresh one on. I also bathe her every night until it goes away.

I agree with a lot of the above, especially that you sometimes just can't avoid the rashes that go with teething. If it's really red and irritated, I would make sure it isn't also a yeast infection. If it is, I've been told to mix lotrimin, desitin and aquaphor to clear it up. It always works really quickly.
I think the only prevention is really putting down a barrier- desitin, aquaphor, etc. But unless you use it at every change or can anticipate when she might be teething it might be hard to prevent.

When the girls are on an antibiotic or teething I give them probiotic drop (Gerber calls them colic drops now) and try to load them up on yogurt to help replace the good bacteria they lose.
Thank you ladies! Seriously, such great advice. I guess there's just some things you have to deal with as they come but I did learn some new options for treatment/helping her feel better so I really appreciate your input.
