I'm 37wks 5 days and suffering terribly from sciatica. It makes me leg weak when I walk and hurts like heck! My doctor is aware and offered a PT referral but I can't get in until next week. . I am a home health nurse and am going to talk to one of our PT's tomorrow for some advice. The heating pad helps a bit but I was wondering if any of you ladies have experienced sciatica and if there is anything you did to help with it? Thanks!
I had really bad sciatica this time around. The things that offered me some relief were daily yoga (just a quick 10 min video, nothing major), a heating pad, forward leaning inversions and using a foam roller.
Laying on the floor with a small very soft rubber ball, about the size of a tennis ball, under my painful spot usually helps. It came with a pregnancy kit. I would assume a tennis ball might work the same. It helped relieve tension in my hip. Ease into it though, otherwise you might hurt a very tender spot.
Yoga helps, as do piriformis stretches. Massaging with a tennis ball (laying down on it to rub or leaning up against a wall to press and move it along your hip) also can help.
I second the tennis ball method. Going to see a chiropractor works best for me. Being pregnant requires us to sleep on our side. Side-sleeping causes your hips to become misaligned pretty easily. When the hips are out of place, the muscles, tendons, and ligaments get pulled to hold everything together. That's where the pain is coming from. Its your body telling you something isn't right. It's pretty common, even for people that aren't pregnant. I hope It's just this and not something more serious. I suffer from spinal stenosis as well as two herniations in my lower back. There is nothing worse than back pain. I hope you find relief soon!
