Because we are still in Denver. We got to the airport, checked in, got through security, had dinner, and got on our flight. And then we sat on the plane for two hours and they cancelled our flight. Over weather in Cleveland. We were flying from Denver to Boston and got cancelled over weather in Cleveland.
The soonest we can get out is Friday. That entails leaving home at 3am flying to Indianapolis where we would have an eight hour layover... With kids... Getting to Boston at 8pm and still having to drive three hours. That's 19 total hours. And then the rental car company told us our price would change from $600 to $1900!!!!!!! For two less days. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!? To fly to a closer airport we can't get there before the 3rd. And there are no cars available.
So it is now 10 hours after we left our house this morning and we are driving home and our vacation is officially cancelled after six months of planning. I want to cry.
We came home and got the kids into bed and called Southwest one more time and told them about the rental car issue. I *think* we may have a flight that leaves on Saturday and flies us to within an hour of the IL's house. They can then take us somewhere local to get a rental car later. It requires approval from higher ups so we have to call the Customer Service headquarters for approval tomorrow. But the agent we talked to was pretty sure that under the circumstances they would allow a complete itinerary change at no cost to us. Our seats are on hold with copious notes about what happened. FX we can salvage 3/4 of our plans.

Oh, @jimbobcooter, I'm sorry. That's terrible. I know how much you were looking forward to this. Hopefully everything works out so you can still enjoy part of your planned vacation.
This is the absolute worst, I would be livid. I'm sorry your vacation is off to such a horrifying start. I really hope they're able to figure something out to salvage it for you.

This sounds like what happened to us for our honeymoon. It was the most stressful thing ever to actually get there, but the vacation itself was amazing! FX they get everything figured out and your vacation goes back to being relaxing and refreshing!
Such a nightmare. I can't believe they can't find an earlier flight, even if it's to a different airport. Hope you are able to salvage what's left of your vacation.

So I have been on the phone with Southwest for an hour and a half so far. Last night some rock star put a new itinerary on hold for us and gave us clear confirmation numbers. It just needed corporate approval. Despite that they are now trying to tell us that Portland Maine doesn't exist and send us to Portland, Oregon via Vegas because "that's the only way we can get you there." JFC I just can't even.
So we are missing FIL's birthday party tonight. Won't get to see BIL and his family. And maybe we'll be taking the kids to see an Elvis impersonator show instead of going sailing. I expect so fucking drink vouchers.

Noooo!! I was reading your update with so much optimism and hope and cringed for you all at the end. Everything is crossed for you that they work something out and get yall there. This is such BS and so many balls dropped by the airlines. They owe you way more than drink vouchers, although I would demand those as well. They owe you to fix this crap and definitely a free flight.
I can hardly believe they expect you to put up with this much rubbish. Do they hate customers or something? I'm so sorry. I know how long you've been planning this holiday and how much you needed it.

Ugh, that's terrible! I can't even imagine dealing with that with the kids. Sorry that your vacation is a bust, hope that you at least manage to enjoy some of it!
OK... final update. blueskiessmiling , yep. Unfortunately for them I went to school in Cleveland so I have tons of friends there. All of whom said what you did. The weather yesterday was perfect. Lying liars who lie! Anyway, it took two hours but we are re- booked on flights to and from Portland, ME. Hopefully we don't have layover issues. We don't leave until Saturday now but at least we are going and we'll still have 10 days there. We won't be able to get a rental car at that airport but FIL can come pick us up and if we really want a car, we can go get one at a local location for a few days. Ie, we'll save some money now. Trying to look at the bright side.
But we got ZERO compensation. In fact the agent this morning told me they wouldn't send us drink vouchers because they were "doing us a favor" by not making us go back to the airport to deal with this. Yeah, go fuck yourself. I'm going to go off somewhere as soon as I figure out where the best pace to do it is. Southwest was the one remaining airline I was willing to put up with and now I hate them too.
In the mean time we are staycationing for three days. We went out for Mexican for lunch and I had two peach mojitos. And as soon as P is awake from his afternoon nap we are going to the pool. No one from work knows I'm not gone and I plan to keep it that way.
Vacation 2.0 commences Saturday morning. I hope. If you want to sacrifice a chicken for us, please do.
Such bullshit! And to say they did you a favor is the f ing cherry on top. It sounds like a good plan b all things considered so hopefully no more vaca drama between now and Saturday, Ill be sending out all the good travel juju I can muster for you guys!!
