I have been wondering this too. DS felt a little warm after his shots last week. We have one of those forehead scanners but i am never sure it's accurate. I've heard the best way to get a baby's temperature is rectally, but that kind of scares me...
I heard rectal was most accurate now. I was super scared to do it, but it was easier than I thought. I put ointment on the tip and you only need to insert a little bit of the thermometer (it's flexible plastic, not glass). He didn't even notice the two times I had to check.
Rectal is best. I've been taking A's temperature frequently lately Under the arm is good too. I don't trust the temporal thermometer that I have. Does he have any other symptoms?

I thought rectal would be hard and painful for E but I really don't think he noticed. The thermometer won't let you put it in further than you have to.
We purchased this Vick's rectal thermometer when DS was a baby...we love it because the shape of it prevents it from being inserted too far. Rectal thermometers give the most accurate readings, so that is what we have always done. Our kids have never seemed to mind it, we just follow the directions to lubricate the tip with water-soluble jelly (not petroleum jelly). If you have to temp under the arm, I was told to add 1 degree to the result. Hope he is feeling better, buttercup! Our 2yo was sick Sunday - Tuesday this week...no fun at all!
