I've dealt with sleep paralysis for a few years now and it seems to be getting worse with pregnancy. I've tried new sleep positions, herbs, teas, changing room temperatures, wiggling fingers, taking naps, changing sleep patterns, diet and a humidifyer. With no luck. Before I was pregnant I was talking to my doctor about starting a short (few month) dose of antidepressants to see if it would help, but I don't want to try those out for the first time while pregnant if I can avoid it. So, I guess my question is does anyone have any experience with sleep paralysis? Or any home remedies that seemed to work for you/someone you know? I've exhausted google so I know its a long shot, but maybe someone has a trick up their sleeve.

Ooo, I will definitely bring up magnesium at my next appointment. Thank you! Homestly, I used to smoke pot every once in a while when it would happen multiple times a night (its legal where I live) and it helped a ton with relaxing, but definitely won't be doing that again for a long time. Haha.
I've had issues with sleep paralysis. I've never found anyone who knows what the heck I'm talking about. Mine only comes on when I'm super stressed and when my sleep patterns are off. For example, I used to experience it during final exams week in college. It did happen a few times when DS was a newb. I haven't specifically looked into remedies (other than getting more regular sleep), but I am on a SSRI. Check with your doctor, but my midwife recommended a magnesium supplement for hormone regulation. It's also helpful with constipation... so don't take too much! I use CALM brand which I find at Whole Foods, but it's available on Amazon too. I recommend the raspberry flavor and/or drinking it with juice. www.amazon.com/Natural-Vitality-Calm-Raspberry-Lemon/dp/B00MQL1JLU/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hpc_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=0YF2SN4MSFK8PRW7E705

I don't have any experience with it. But, if they do suggest magnesium supplements, keep in mind that your body does not easily absorb magnesium when ingested orally. A topical supplement (magnesium oil or lotion) is more readily absorbed and utilized by your system. I use it on the bottoms of my feet
I'm just asking because I'm not sure I know exactly what you mean. Do you actually feel paralyzed or is it where your limb (specifically my arms)completely fall asleep to the point of no feeling? Sometimes my arm goes completely numb and I have to pick it up with my other arm. It scares me to death when it happens. Its not all the time but maybe a dozen times or so. This may not even be what you're talking about.

It's an interruption in REM sleep that causes your mind to be "awake" but your body/muscles to still be in the part of REM sleep that "paralyzes" them, sometimes you get hallucinations or like a panic response from it and it can last from just a few seconds to a few mins. I cant remember the exact scientific words for it all, but thats the gist of it. I told my doctor about it when it first started happening and they tested for some other sleep disorders including narcolepsy which can cause it, but come up with sleep paralysis. Also, your arm thing sounds so scary! :0 Have you ever had it checked out? I wonder if it could be circulation or nerve related?
also thanks to everyone I really appreciate the responses. I cant wait to try out the magnesium to see if it helps!
It generally happens when I have my arm up over my head in a bad position. I'll wake up to a cold, lifeless arm. It's super creepy and I'm terrified I'll break my arm before realizing it's numb.
