This made me really think. Unless I try really hard I can only think of maybe one or two birthday gift from when I was under 16.
In general you don't start forming lasting memories until 4 or 5? But even without that, she doesn't know what a birthday is, she isn't asking for stuff, I'm just mostly too lazy to bother this year and while I can get away with it, why not?
Answering for kids, as DDs birthday is only 3 weeks later.
A big party. Honestly, we will probably not get gifts for either kid. We're having a big party, about 40 people, which gets pretty expensive. We might give a book or two to each.
Their actual birthdays will be spent doing something fun, as just our family of 4. Probably the zoo for one, and maybe picnic and walk at the beach, the science museum or mini golf for the other.

This is the kind of thing I'd like to do going forward in real life. Gifts are NOT my love language, but quality time is. Even with my husband, we but stuff when we need it, then at birthday/holiday we are like....nothing I want but lots of good food and a day off work....haha.

I think the quality time is more memorable too!
I love doing gifts, but everyone else buys my kids SO much stuff.
We're also in the experience train. This year the party is mostly because it's fun for me and I haven't had a chance to do it recently. The only reason I have gifts is because I tend to grab things on sale and I got two things that are age appropriate at 1.

I think I will just pick out a charm for her charm bracelet that I started for her. And I will let my toddler pick something out for her. I bought some duplo Legos and I'm going to convert my toddlers train table to a Lego table for his bday coming up soon. I think he'd prefer the non duplo variety but I can't have those laying around with the little one putting everything in her mouth.

2dumbdogs,ampaints, mommabakes, Just catching up on this thread, and we do the same. We have taken a day off every year for DS' birthday and usually go to the zoo, or a theme park or one year he just wanted to take the dogs to the dog park all day. He has really grown to revel in his "special day" much more than any gifts we have given him. We've toned down the gifts now and we'll probably do the same with DD. It's fun to see what they want to do, and he has really appreciated the attention he gets on those days.
