TL;DR after 38 hours of back labour Flint Irving Robert was born via C-section at 5:38pm on July 16th.
ETA: 20" and a tiny 7lbs 11oz after the behemoth we were expecting.
Long Version:
Friday morning I woke up at 3:30 with "different" contraction. While they weren't painful they certainly didn't feel very nice, had a kind of rise and fall to them, were every 15, then 10, then 8 minutes apart, and were enough to keep me awake.
DH got up to work as normal and I visited with my sister until I was supposed to go pick up the step-kids. She convinced me that I probably shouldn't be driving and so I called their mom and said we'd pick them up after DH was done work. He came home at noon and we went into town to pick them up and grab groceries, meanwhile contractions were every 5-6 minutes and I couldn't really walk through them.
We went home, had supper, and CX were every 4 mins so my parents came to grab the dogs, we brought the kids to their grandparents, and went to the hospital. After being monitored for 20 minutes they checked me in - I was only 3cm and 25% effaced.
I laboured through the night and leaning on DH got me through CXs around 3:30am I decided to try the bath (amazing!) and was able to sleep between them.
At 9am my OB came by to check and I was only 4cm but 50%. He decided to break my waters. Feeling like I was constantly Peeing myself was very odd lol. THe nurse offered me gas to help with the pain of the back labour.
At 1pm I was 6cm and 80%. At this point the back labour was really starting to get to me and I could see it was really upsetting my labour peeps to see me like that. my doc gave me a reality check that it was going to be at least 6 more hours and suggested I take something actual for the pain. They gave me dilaudid for the pain and a gravol shot. Again I was able to nod off between contractions a bit.
As the meds wore off the contractions were unbearable. At some point they strapped me up to the monitors and I could tell that his heart rate was way too low. It was terrifying. I was checked again at 4:30 and though I was 6cm I had gone back down to 50%. At that point the doc said we could be there for days with no more progress and highly recommended a C-section as the safest option for both of us.
The transfer to the operating room was quite traumatic for me. Every bump and movement triggered another contraction. Once I had the spinal on it was bliss!!! The procedure itself was amazing! I could actually be aware of what was happening and it seemed only minutes later I was holding my baby boy
Rest of the hospital stay went very well, the nurse said she's never seen Bili levels so low, and we are doing well at home.
Looking back, although I was happy with each decision as I made them, I wish I had taken an epidural as soon as they started to get bad. I think it would have made the whole experience a lot more positive, even if it still ended up in C-section.
High 5s for reading my novel!!
