I went in to be induced at 9 pm Tuesday night and they got me in a room and hooked up to an IV at about 10. They checked me and of course I wasn't dilated at all so at about 10:30 or so they placed the Cytotec next to my cervix to soften it.
The Cytotec brought on contractions that were about 4-5 minutes apart and about 30 seconds to a minute long. The nurse didn't want to give me another dose since I was having contractions. They checked me sometime in the middle of the night and I was still only at 1-2 cm dilated but still contracting fairly regularly. They told me to get some rest (yeah right) and they would be back at 5 am to start Pitocin.
They started Pitocin at 5 am and it really didn't change much about my contractions. The OB came and saw me at about 8 and I was still only 2 cm dilated. She decided to break my water in hopes that it would get me going. They also upped my Pitocin a little as well. After they broke my water the contractions were so much worse. They came right on top of one another and never seemed to end. At this point it felt nothing like my previous unmedicated labor and I was exhausted from staying up all night. I made the decision to get an epidural at that time because I needed the rest and coping with the pain was so hard. I wasn't able to move at all because they wanted me on the monitor the entire time.
The anesthesiologist came and he started trying to place the epidural at around 9 am. It felt like it took forever to get it in since my contractions were so close together and it took him 2 tries to find the spot. At 9:30 am the epidural was in and starting to work but I didn't really get relief until about 10 am. It felt really strange, like my legs were asleep, very tingly.
I was just kind of getting used to the sensation when I started feeling a lot of pain and pressure in my right hip area. The nurse gave me another dose of medicine for the epi and was in the process of telling me when they would check me next when I started having intense pain and pressure in what felt like my hips. She checked and I was ready to push. The OB rushed in and they got me ready really quick. I pushed for about 10 minutes and he was out.
Silas was born at 10:52 weighing 7 lbs exactly. Labor was different than my natural labor with L but not worse, just different. I am really glad it was so quick, had it been longer I don't think it would have been as good of an experience.
We hated staying in the hospital for the night with all the nurses coming in and out of our room. Luckily we were able to get discharged yesterday and are home now. L loves his baby brother a lot. I am struggling with sleep and hope that I can get some with him in the cosleeper next to me. I am so in love and amazed that I get to keep this tiny person after all we went through to get him and being so scared I was going to loose him after the accident.
Pictures to follow.
