All the talk of wine in the randoms today got me thinking. When will you have your first drink after baby arrives? Especially if you plan to BF, how do you fit in a drink here and there? I bought a bottle of wine in my last grocery trip but I haven't opened it yet.
FTM here so not sure how true this is but when we took the BFing class, the lactation consultant/RN mentioned that you wouldn't have to pump & dump if you drink alcohol b/c (according to her), it leaves your system within 2-3 hours and won't affect baby. Caffeine, however, will - so still drink/eat food & beverages w/ caffeine in moderation. Thought that was pretty interesting....
My rule (and it came from an LC) is, "sober enough to drive, sober enough to nurse." I will usually have a small glass of wine while nursing if I want wine, bc it won't hit my system right away, and that gives me at least 2 hrs to metabolize it before my next nursing session

I've read that basically as long as you aren't really feeling it, you're okay to BF. And also that the alcohol will leave your milk supply, so no need to pump and dump (unless you're drunk and your boobs are so full they're hurting, and you want to express some).
As for my plan, I don't have any qualms about having a (single) glass whenever I feel like it, and I've heard it's best to drink right after (or during!) a feeding, because it gives your body as much time as possible to filter it out before the next feeding.

With DD1 I didn't get to drink for a while. She would nurse unpredictably for hours on end and I feel most comfortable with the 2 hour rule as I have a low tolerance.
DD2 was on a 3 hour nursing schedule of her own choosing early. I had no problem drinking a glass of wine then.
We're formula feeding, so that's not a factor for me. I rarely end up drinking though. Had my first postpartum glass of wine tonight though, today was rough!

I don't much or very quickly. So I never really figured my 1/2 glass of wine drank with a meal over 30 minutes was much cause for concern.
This time DH has been instructed to get me a VERY good bottle of wine and sneak it into the hospital along with a medium rare steak as my first meal after giv get birth. I don't care if it's breakfast, that will be my first meal.
We are ff this time, so I plan to ha e a little something soon! With ds1, I really didn't he much at all. I have always been a lightweight and generally wouldn't feel comfortable driving after drinking 1 glass of wine, so I abstained while bfing with the exception of a few sips.
I'm bf during the day and ff at night for 2-3 feeds depending on if she will latch. So around 9 if I feel like having something I do. I've had a margarita and some wine. We just moved to an area with trader joes and a total wine so we are enjoying having options. So far we have just been picking stuff up that is on sale. Tried a rose because of parenting but I hated it. I'll stick with cab or chardonnay. My go to is cab noble vines 337 and Kendall Jackson chardonnay
I've had a half glass here and there through out 2nd and 3rd tri, but I'm looking forward to enjoying a full glass (maybe even a second) once she's out and we have a routine down. DH and I were just talking tonight about having a designated parent for when one of us would like a second drink. I told him I had 9 months of IOUs lol
I haven't had a drink in a few years since I just make a damn fool out of myself when I drink and had too many experiences vomiting even at work happy hours due to being a lightweight on even one or two drinks. Cheers to all the mommas who get to get their drink on!
I had a margarita as soon as I got home from the hospital last time and I follow the safe to drive safe to BF rule. Once I have a stash of BM I will occasionally drink more and mix it with BM that was pumped when I wasn't drinking.
A margarita sounds nice too. I'm not a big drinker to begin with, but right now I feel like I'd take a few sips of a drink and fall asleep. I need to go out to dinner and enjoy a drink.

YES. This is what I am looking forward to. Going out to dinner and being able to order a drink like a damn adult, lol
We went out to a Mexican resturant while baby was in nicu. I decided I wanted to get a margarita since I was finally off my PP meds. My H died because I told the college aged waiter that it was my first drink in 7 months and he better make it the best damn margarita he could. I think I scared the poor kid. He also comped it so a free margarita is even better

I'm having H pick up some Shiner Ruby Redbird now in case it isn't available when I deliver. Other than that, I'd really love a dirty vodka martini...but I'll have to wait a bit for that one.

Oh yes total +1 to the dirty martini. I'm drooling now......

My friends brought me a few bottles of wine as a congratulations gift, so really, it would be rude to not open them! I had my first 1/2 glass last night, 7 days after DD was born and immediately after breastfeeding her. It was delicious! Now you guys are making me want a margarita...!
Some of this convo is making me wish we didn't live on the wagon! SO has had problems with drunk and stupid when younger, so he abstains totally, and I got pregnant so fast with DD after I met him that it was simple to give up my sometimes hard ciders or mixed drinks. I will verrrrrrry rarely have a glass of something fruity if I am out with friends and not around SO. Like, 2 or 3 times in the past 3 years.
But that moscato lemonade absolutely sounds amazing. Or a nice crisp sangria. Sigh. Fruity is, or was, totally my jam.

Also going to be following the "safe to drive, safe to BF" rule. First time around I pumped and dumped if I even had one drink, I was so super paranoid. However, I really dislike pumping and even though I was doing it several times per day, considered it such an ordeal that it didn't seem worth it to me to have a drink and go through the process of pumping if I couldn't use the milk. So eventually I stopped drinking until I was done BFing.
