They have decided to go public with their affair in a bid to raise awareness of Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA) relationships


Mares, a mother of nine, gave birth to Peterson when she was 16 years old, and he was adopted shortly thereafter


They were reunited for the first time last year after reconnecting over Facebook


The couple, who live separately in Clovis, New Mexico, developed feelings for each other and their relationship became sexual a few weeks later


But they are banned from having any contact with each other by the courts

Yeah im not sure what exactly prison would do in this situation. I don't get incest at all, but they are both legal consenting adults. Also given that she didn't raise him there wasn't any grooming up to this. Counseling seems like a much better outcome, especially for the sake of the other children.

I think this is generally how I feel as well.

To me, while this is technically incest, these are consenting adults so I am more of the opinion that they should sort of just extensively counseled but then left alone.  I don't see the benefit in punishment.

I'd be worried they would start having kids. With her stellar track record and now combined with their increased chance of having children with severe challenges, then what? Incest is a crime, so I'd say the state should do whatever it needs to do to keep them apart right away. I agree they also need psych eval and treatment for sure, though.

I've seen stories where an adult daughter reunited with a dad who had deserted her as a baby and they fall in love. It's...odd and a little icky to me, but consenting adults and no evidence of abuse, who am I to interject?

BUT the giving up all your kids for a man...any man, related or not...raises lots of flags, no?

This is where I am at as well. It's gross to me but what is the point of putting them in prison? Though aside from the obvious I do seriously side eye her for risking losing her other children.

It's kind of a slippery slope to start saying people at high risk for having babies with challenges can't have sex, though...

Or that babies with challenges shouldn't be allowed to be born? Yeah, dangerous slope with that.

Did not say that. What I said was that this crime should be stopped. Continuing this sick crime could have serious consequences that these two are most likely not capable of handling. Trying to prevent that from happenning is a good thing.

I agree that I'm not on board with it being ok legally. What I think is sticky is saying that because it could result in a child with challenges is the reason it should be stopped. If it were a father and son, wouldn't it still be wrong? My cousin and his wife are both CF carriers, and they aren't rich. Should they not have been legally allowed to TTC? That's what I meant by using that reasoning as a slippery slope.

Yeah besides generally being completely squicked out by this, my heart also breaks for her other kids who she says she is fine with losing contact with. I think I read that one is as young as 5? That is absolutely heartbreaking and makes her the shittiest person ever.
