STMs with toddlers chime in?!

Our tot (2.5) toppled out  or climbed out of his crib Sunday night.  We didn't see it happen as he was already in his room ready for night time sleeps!  Having never tried to climb out before and the degree of scared he was after, our bets are on toppled. 
He is NOT ready to be out of the crib.  If we take him out, we can kiss sleep good-bye.  He is an ACTIVE toddler and takes about 40min to wind down in his crib after we leave the room each night, and that's after 20-30min of quiet reading and cuddling with us and no TV for 30min before that! He is also the kind of kid who will TOO quickly realize he can get in an out of his toddler bed on his own, just like he did at a friend's house.  he thought it was THE BEST TOY EVER.

Any who, We are thinking we can keep him in the crib if we could lower the mattress a bit more.  anyone ever successfully put the mattress all the way on the floor? Did it work?

Not to change the subject, but what is your plan for potty training? Are you going to night train now or wait until later?

I'm not much help here. We moved J to his own bed to free up the crib. He likes playing in it but he sleeps in our bed and refuses to be moved.

My just about 2 y/o has also climbed out of the crib one time. We did not see it happen either but it must have scared him pretty bad because he hasn't tried to since! I was dreading thinking about getting him to sleep in a toddler bed too. He is super active and takes 30-60 mins to wind down and fall asleep too! I guess I don't have any suggestions but good luck! Did it scare him enough that he may not attempt to climb out again soon?

I'm not much help here. We moved J to his own bed to free up the crib. He likes playing in it but he sleeps in our bed and refuses to be moved.

His daycare will start PT first week in September when he graduates to the next class.  He's still in diapers day and night.  He likes to flush his poops down the toilet.  He is aware of when he has a poop in his diaper. We started last week letting him watch Daniel Tiger Potty episode and he has since started sitting on his little potty chair instead of playing with it!  
We will likely do a 2.5 day potty training intensive a couple of weeks into his new classroom adventures, or maybe even 3 weeks.

I don't think he will climb, but he is SO TALL we are afraid he could topple over.

That's how we approached it. We said you can't get out of bed until the light turns green, not that he has to be sleeping. He gets to sleep with 1 book and 2 stuffed animals so he has something to occupy himself. We basically emptied the rest of his room. We hear him over the monitor in the morning now "it's green, come and get me!!!"

I need to find a place for all his toys...small condo.
I am much more worried about the getting to sleep than the staying in bed in the morning.
We are going to see what happens with the crib if we put the mattress on the floor first.

We have our very active toddler in a regular bed now. He'll be 2 next week. He's been in his bed since April. He did surprisingly well. We don't have anything in his room besides his bed, dresser, and soft chair. We've child proofed the dresser and closet doors so there is literally nothing fun to do. He sometimes takes 30-45 mins like you've said but to is, it's not very different than the crib.

DD was a very active toddler. She learned to crawl out of the PNP on a vacation. It was awful.

By a little after two, she was climbing it of the crib - and back in! We didn't realize it until I was randomly watching her on the monitor. So we switched her to a toddler bed that evening with no problems. She's now in a full sized bed and STILL won't get out on her own.

Like @aemommy, we didn't have any toys in her room, just because there's no room. There's even less now that it's a full bed.

MH convinced me to move DS to a bed a few weeks after DD was born to free up the crib. I would have been content to buy another crib since he never actually tried to get out. It's gone pretty well for nighttime sleep but naps can be a challenge. I would say he's averagely active but plays hard and usually sleeps hard.

He's in a full size day bed that was already in his room with a bed rail. We talked about the big boy bed and had him pick out sheets and then just went for it. We kept the crib in his room for a few days but he started talking about it being the baby's bed and wanting her to sleep in it do we moved it. He was pretty excited about the whole transition and would tell anyone who would listen about his big bed.

It does take him anywhere from 5 - 45 minutes to fall asleep but he doesn't try to get out until morning when he sits on the edge where the rail isn't and calls for us.

Naps usually require me going in 1 - 2 times to get him down but he doesn't usually get all the way out, just sits on the edge.

Also he does have a few toys in his room but nothing too appealing - mostly stuffed animals, a few puzzles and books. He doesn't get out to play with them (we have a video monitor). He gets to have two small, safe toys in bed with him to play with until he falls asleep.

We switched just before he turned 3 to a full mattress on the floor then up on a bed frame a few weeks later. It took him at least 9 months to figure out that he could get out of bed. He would wait until we came to get him out every morning. He wasn't climbing out of his crib though, we did it because we moved so we wanted to make that transition all together. We never did the crib mattress down low on the floor.

We switched him to a mattress on the floor just after he turned two. He never felt confined to his bed and would get out and come to his door. We had to put a baby gate up to keep him in his room. I also have a super active kid and it took him awhile to adjust. And some nights it can still take him 40+ minutes to fall asleep, but he just lays in bed. We did it at that age because I really didn't want to try to move him after I had the baby.

I think if it's safe to drop the mattress to the floor in the crib then it's worth a try to see if it works.

We caught DD1 (2.5) "folding" herself over the front of the crib about a week before DD2 was born. We were not ready to transition her with the new baby, so we turned the crib around so the taller back was facing out and the shorter front was against the wall. That was 3+ months ago, and have not had any issues since. She's super active too, we'll probably transition her to a toddler bed in the next 6 months.

He is allowed to play quietly or read books in his bed with his night light if he wants. It takes him a while usually, but he does go to sleep (albeit sometimes on the floor and I have to carry him to his bed).

He stays in his room until we come get him up in the morning or after nap - again, he can play quietly if he wakes earlier.

Works great for us.

I know people who moved the mattress to the flood or rotated the crib with the high side out, with success. I bought the largest size sleep sacks available and DS couldn't get a leg over the crib rail with it on. That won't work, if you think he toppled over head first, though. When we switched him to a toddler bed, we did have issues with him trying to leave the room, especially at nap time. We tried putting a baby gate up in the doorway. A lot of times we'd end up laying in his room with him, which I don't recommend.

Our crib is the same height all around.
And he figured out how to open the sleepsack about a month ago! We tried putting it backwards and he just freaks out for a long while. . But we may try again.

DD crawled out of her crib at 21 months and she was super active as well... I thought it was just a fluke but I'd put her back in and she'd climb right back out lol! That day I baby proofed her entire room, took out all the toys and gated her door because she could open door knobs too >< As concerned as I was with her playing in her room and not sleeping well it was never an issue. She was tired and would sleep! Good luck ma!

He's 2.5
We moved him around 2 when he fell out of the crib climbing out.
