We did clip it. I honestly can't say if it helped or not - we did it last week. I am having a hard time figuring out what the issue is exactly, other than a lot of the time I can't get him to latch at all and then we both get worked up. Going back to the breastfeeding clinic tomorrow

Ugh, we just found out that baby and I have yeast infections - my boobs and her bottom and on her face. Anyone have this before or have any tips for dealing with it? We're starting a topical ointment but I hear I need to sterilize and wash everything that comes into contact with the infected areas. Looks like a lot of laundry is in my future.

Rinse your nipples with ACV after each feeding. Wash everything in hot water.

I had such an encouraging visit at the breastfeeding clinic. LO has gained enough weight that it's safe to remove some of the supplementation - in an effort to help him feel hungry and eat more vigorously (at every other feeding). I tried it this afternoon and he actually really and truly nursed - like he really ate! Not just comfort sucking. I'm crying, I can't believe it! I feel so encouraged by this plan.
Also, the clinic has three staff people: a doctor, an LC, and a psychologist. The psychologist visits every mom at the clinic, since difficulty BFing can contribute to PPD. I'm so grateful I found this clinic - I have no idea how it will all work out, but at least I don't have to feel so powerless.

hannahbear I'm so happy for you! I've had a couple of times where DD2 nurses to the point that she's satiated & actually comes off milk-drunk, which I never got to experience with my other two. I know what a big deal those little successes can be! And that clinic sounds awesome! What a great, well thought-out resource!
My milk came in today and I stopped supplementing this morning, LO just spend nearly an hour nursing and is now happily snoozing on my chest. I had no idea how satisfying it would be to be able to feed him with my boobs, and after the very rocky start we had I'm feeling the same relief over here! Fx things just keep getting better and better for you!

hummingbird125 & hannahbear I'm so happy for you guys!! The first week I was just trying to "make it through" breastfeeding. But now I actually appreciate and enjoy it. Even if it does mean 3 times less night sleep than the formula fed lol.

I tried removing a supplement and he screamed bloody murder! So I guess we will see how that plan goes lol. Maybe I will just try to reduce the volume in the supplements by a little - I accidentally did that this afternoon and it resulted in another very good feeding.

I pumped for the first time tonight since H is going to bottle feed and let me sleep. It went well and I got a lot of milk but my nips have been sore ever since (more than they get with actual breastfeeding). Did I do something wrong? Turn up the intensity too high?

Probably the intensity.
I found eventually my nipples got used to max intensity, but it took time.
ETA: I think flange size can also contribute, but not sure.

I have the Medela Pump in Style, and its instructions recommend initially turning it up until it's a little uncomfortable, and then turn it down a little. I find what's "uncomfortable" varies across the sessions, and between sessions. I also find it to be more uncomfortable than nursing.
Nursing sessions with DS only seem to last about 15 mins in total (with a burp in between). He isn't falling asleep while latched on, but pulls off and falls asleep.
He's gaining weight okay, I'm wondering if he just eats so fast that he fills up fast too. I've pumped once a day and noticed that the few times he's wanted to eat within 2 hours of pumping he does eat for a longer amount of time.
So he could just be a fast eater since my boobs might as well be spraying into his mouth and there's no need to worry, right?
I wish we could see how much they're getting with each session

My kids never eat for very long at a time. I think my milk just flows really quickly.

Ouch. I think DS did a number on my left nipple. It's looks pretty rough and hurt a lot last time he nursed, until I finally pulled him off it and switched to the other boob.
If I try to rest it for a few feedings, should I pump that side? My milk just came in yesterday, I don't want to mess up my supply...

Feed him on the other side first for the next few hours. They are usually more gentle on the second breast

+1. Also continually rub breastmilk on the sore parts. Then let it dry between feedings. If you can just leave it hang out to air dry that will be your best bet, hummingbird125.
LO did the same thing to me initially. It hurt for the first 15 seconds and then stopped. It's finally starting to not hurt. At three weeks tomorrow, I think I'm finally toughening up.
Edit: Dawww, I just noticed that this is my 1,000 post!

Thanks for the suggestions! I have another question for you pros, sorry, I'm just full of them today...
We went back to the hospital for our postpartum visit with a lactation consultant today, which went great. They did a weighed feeding and I forget the numbers but they said he was getting enough. With the LC's help I got a much better latch on the left side too. Anyways, he nursed for nearly an hour there (one boob, then the other, then back to the first). At home the most he'd done so far is maybe 30-40min. That feeding started around 9:20am. Since then he's only nursed for about ten minutes on one side and maaaaybe 5 min on the other. He is SO sleepy and I can't get him awake enough to keep nursing. Changing his diaper helped me get the second 5 min but now I'm at a loss, and it has been 5 hours since the start of that long feed. I'm going to eat some lunch and then try to wipe him down with a cool cloth and try again - but am I wrong for being concerned about this? DH is in favor of letting him sleep but I fee like he just hasn't eaten enough since this morning...

If he nursed for a full hour, I'd bet he is fine. Especially if he is gaining. Try another diaper change after lunch and see how he responds.

Thanks eaglewife - I'm sitting hear panicking that he's starving, but will just let him chill for a little bit. Definitely doesn't help that the PP hormones have hit me HARD today and I just sobbed because of a music video...

Babies will let you know when they need to eat. Day 3/4 gave me a HUGE emotional crash. Every thing made me cry. Sob it out, wash your face and know that this is normal.
Little Bird will probably start smacking his lips and rooting for food in no time. Has he shown any waking signs yet? (Not sure what time zone you are in.)

Once you know he can transfer enough milk and gains well, you can start to trust his little body. It is pretty typical for feeds to alternate between long and short and for sleepy periods to happen. 2 of my 3 kids have done that.

eaglewife - about an hour later I did finally a good LONG feed into him - almost an hour. Then he was awake and hung out with dad for almost an hour before he started rooting again. I nursed him but he lost interest after about 10 minutes. I think it's just a funny day and I need to just keep watching his signals and nurse when he's telling me he needs to.
hummingbird125 I've always found it easiest to just nurse on demand. That way you just respond to baby, and you don't need to watch the clock or worry.
I know this isn't your first rodeo, but one thing I found to work when I had difficult burpers in the hospital was to lay them on my forearm with their face in my palm and rub their back for 3 to 5 minutes. Then sit them up upright and usually you got a burp pretty quickly. Just be careful not to lay them completely flat because then they will throw up all over you.
