Is anyone else dealing with this? We are really struggling. We started supplementing with formula (up&up sensitive) about a month ago. We also started purees. He went from going every day, sometimes every other day to going once or twice a week. He has been straining since yesterday. He finally went at daycare and she said it was huge and hard and it took a lot out of him to push it out. Prunes helped, but they cause a lot of discomfort. He wakes up screaming when he eats them. None of the other purees seem to make much of a difference. I bought apple juice, but haven't given it to him yet. Maybe I need to switch formulas or back off of solids completely for a while longer. I'm not sure what to do here. I feel bad for my baby. He's clearly uncomfortable if he is straining so hard.

6 months is the age that you can usually start giving a bit of water, I would give him a sippy of water and if he won't take that you can always dilute the formula a teeny bit more than usual (no more than 2 oz or so a day).

What type of purees? I think some are more "binding" than others.
Also, our pedi told us to only change one thing at a time so we can know what causes the change. So, maybe back off purees for a week or so and see if he's still constipated or visa versa? Hugs mama, its hard to see our LOs in pain.

When you do prunes, how much does he get? Maybe it's just too much and he only needs a little bit? Apples are supposed to move things along too, maybe they would do so more gently for him?

Stage 1 foods. He tolerates fruits except for prunes and I won't give him bananas since they are constipating. He was up in the MOTN crying after peas due to gas I think. He doesn't like squash, but it doesn't seem to cause tummy trouble. He threw up all over me after green beans. Sweet potatoes seem to be ok.
We started formula a couple of weeks before solids, but I'm still not 100% sure that's it. Or maybe I'm just in denial because we have a ton left and it's expensive.

Not a lot, maybe a couple of teaspoons if that. Apples do seem to be ok.

We do a couple ounces of straight pear juice in the morning and then in the evening until everything starts back up. There's also some kind of medicine that's made out of prune concentrate you can give them.
We have had issues with this too. And hugs momma, i know how much it sucks to see your LO straining. We have done a few extra ounces of water everyday (as pp suggested). If LO is 6 months there is no limit how much s/he can have but if less than 6 months, try 3 or 4 oz just once to see if that helps. If so and you want to keep it up, you can do an extra ounce every day, but not more than that. I have also used the rectal thermometer to get things moving - it works fast so be prepared with wipes and a changing pad! Good luck![
ETA - as others have suggested, you can do an ounce of pear juice but i have always had luck with the water and the thermometer.
